NEW GLASGOW - Patrons' hearts were as full of generosity as their plates were with turkey at New Glasgow Lobster Suppers on Sunday.
A waiting line extended well into the restaurant's parking lot for an annual Thanksgiving dinner fundraiser organized by the New Glasgow Christian Church.
"Every year it seem to be more and more," said volunteer Judy Clark.
Being involved with the dinner for about 20 years, Clark has witnessed the event's importance within the community.
It's a meal that not only showcases the local agriculture, but also the greater community's generosity.
"We're really happy because all the money raised goes back to people in the community," she said. "It all goes to people that need it."
Pastor Tim Edwards said that has included paying for emergency ambulance trips, lending support after a house fire, or even helping out families who may have fallen on hard times and can't afford groceries or oil.
While the dinner does require some overhead costs, Edwards said much of it is covered through donations from local farmers and businesses, as well as from the owners of New Glasgow Lobster Suppers.
"We have a lot of contributions and volunteers," said Edwards. "And it's not just from our church. There's a lot of people in the community that come to join us just for this particular event."
While many of the patrons were from the surrounding communities, some had come from much further.
Miscouche newlyweds Justin and Melissa MacLean had extra reason to be thankful at the dinner.
The two had been married on Saturday and officially began their honeymoon on Monday.
"We were at Dreamweavers Cottages down the road, and she recommended we come here," said Justin. "I've been here before, it's all good."
Edwards said the dinner has been ongoing for about 50 years.
He said he wasn't surprised at the popularity of the dinner, which saw an estimated 800 patrons throughout the evening.
"It's a wonderful community effort and people who come and enjoy a good meal know their money is being well spent."
