The RCMP issued a notice to Islanders this morning about a motor vehicle accident.

It closed Route 2 in Summerside between the Travellers Rest roundabout and the Waite Road in Sherbrooke/Summerside.

The roadway has since opened.

The notice was made public shortly after 8 a.m.

The accident has caused traffic backups as vehicles are redirected into Summerside to avoid that section of highway. This is creating delays in travelling through the city.

Power has been knocked out to nearby residents, with the City of Summerside saying power will likely remain out for an extended period of time.

City electrical crews are on site working to restore power.
