Following Friday's sale, manager says beef annual event is 'alive and well'
The grand champion steer of the 2016 Easter Beef Show and Sale fetched a top price of $5.75 per pound.
The steer also caused a bit of unexpected drama at the 65th annual sale, held Friday at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown. Just as it was time to take pictures of the winning animal, owner and buyer, the steer temporarily got loose, crashing into the gates surrounding the show area and dropping the jaws of spectators and buyers.
However, once the animal was brought under control, the rest of the sale turned out to be a great day with great results, said Lynda MacSwain, manager of the sale.
"It was a strong day. We had excellent buyer turnout and we're very pleased with the sale average."
The support from buyers was really encouraging to see, she added.
"We were optimistic that it would be a strong sale and our buyers came through.
"We had a full house, and they stayed right until the end. We had great support of the beef industry, from both the agriculture and the business community on P.E.I."
MacSwain says the sale is back where it needs to be moving forward and, all past worries aside, the show and sale are here to stay.
"What 2016 shows us is that the Easter Beef Show and Sale is alive and well. We're looking forward to next year."
Following the sale, bid taker Bob Connolly echoed these comments, noting he was impressed with the outcome and looking forward as things are bound to be even better in 2017.
"Next year, we'll probably have 50 or 60 cattle here,"he said.
"It was a better sale with more cattle. The prices were pretty strong throughout the day, they held up well. It was good, so we're back on track."
