Drunk driver fined after crash

A woman who drove her car into a stopped vehicle while she was drunk was fined $1,000 in provincial court in Charlottetown Thursday.

Rita Marie Lea, 57, appeared before Judge John Douglas where she pleaded guilty to driving drunk.

The court heard Lea was driving on North River Road in Charlottetown on Aug. 7, 2015 when she ran into a vehicle stopped at a traffic light.

Lea was unable to provide adequate breath samples but did provide a blood sample.

That sample showed her blood alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit several hours after the accident.

Lea’s lawyer provided the court with a letter that showed she entered an addiction program the day after the collision.

Douglas said the blood alcohol level and the accident were aggravating factors, but the steps Lea took to address her addiction since then outweighed those factors.

Along with the fine, Lea must pay a $300 victim surcharge.

She is also banned from driving for one year.
