Provincial Command takes over city legion branch

Infighting and financial struggles create challenges for branch in Charlottetown

The Charlottetown Legion is in a state of operational and financial turmoil.

Provincial Command has appointed Jim Ross, a long-time member of this storied branch, to work with two other trustees to right the rocky ship.

Ross says the trio of trustees have been instructed to “try to find out what the problems are and see if we can fix them.’’

Ross says Provincial Command has received complaints of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 Charlottetown concerning infighting between different individuals. He adds the executive was not working as a cohesive unit.

“That has been a problem trying to get people to work together,’’ he says.

He adds the branch, which has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in renovations to its building on Pownal Street over the past few years, has been struggling to bring in adequate revenue.

Revenue, in fact, has been down noticeably over the past 10 years, says Ross.

He says the Charlottetown Legion has lost a great number of veterans in recent years that were strong supporters of the establishment.

The ability to attract considerable benefits and dances, he said, is key to returning the branch to more stable footing.

Ross says the Provincial Command appointed trustees will be in control of the Charlottetown branch until a time deemed fit to turn it back over to a yet to be elected new executive.

Until that time, activity at the branch will be business as usual.

“Everything will be the same except we will try to bring in more revenue,’’ says Ross. “I’m confident that the Legion will keep going in Charlottetown. I have no doubt about that.’’
