Prince Edward Island provincial court
A woman who stole about $22 worth of energy drinks and makeup while she had more than $300 in cash in her purse was given a suspended sentence Thursday in provincial court.
Kendell Marie Hardt, 20, appeared before Chief Judge John Douglas in Charlottetown where she pleaded guilty to the theft.
In giving the suspended sentence, Douglas ordered Hardt to perform 16 hours of community service and pay a $100 victim surcharge.
The court heard that on Feb. 20 around 5:30 p.m. a security guard at the Superstore on University Avenue saw Hardt put two energy drinks and some makeup in her purse.
Hardt then proceeded to pay for some other items through a self-serve check out.
Hardt’s case went through alternative, which would have meant no criminal record if she completed several steps, but she didn’t write the necessary apology letter or perform the required community service.
Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Hardt had the cash in her purse to give to the father of her child for childcare.
