Governor General David Johnston will officially reopen Confederation Centre’s newly modernized Homburg Theatre on Monday, June 16.

Wayne Hambly, chairman of the board of Confederation Centre, made the announcement Monday.

He said the public is invited to gather on the centre’s exterior upper plaza, behind the box office marquee and in front of the upper theatre entry, by 10:30 a.m.

At that time the governor general will be joined by local representatives to cut a large ribbon and officially declare the theatre open. Following this, Johnston will make a formal address inside the Homburg Theatre.

This free theatre event will also feature some of the performing talent that can be found throughout the centre in the summer months, including a sneak peek performance from The Charlottetown Festival’s Canada ROCKS!

“We are very proud to celebrate the completion of a massive $7 million renovation to the centre’s 1,100-seat theatre and even more proud to have his excellency perform the honours and reveal the transformation of our 50-year-old main theatre,” said Hambly.

To accomplish this work, the theatre was closed to the public from Jan. 1 to April 30, 2014. Chief among the many improvements are two new aisles, several cat walks, all-new seating and state-of-the-art acoustic paneling, lighting technology and ceiling panels.

“We want everyone to join us at Confederation Centre of the Arts as we celebrate the successful completion of these significant theatre upgrades, as well as commemorate our 50th anniversary,” says Jessie Inman, CEO of Confederation Centre.

The ceremony and the welcome show are free of charge. However, as tickets are based on limited availability, the public should book in advance, either in person at the Confederation Centre box office, or by calling (902) 566-1267, or toll free at 1-800-565-0278.
