SUMMERSIDE – P.E.I.’s English Language School Board will implement a new three-year plan when classes resume next September.

The board reviewed the plan Tuesday at its regular monthly meeting in Summerside.

“A strategic plan gives us a focus and a common goal,” said superintendent Cynthia Fleet.

The plan focuses on three main goals to be accomplished by June 30, 2017.

The first is to increase the number of students graduating with math and English.

The second goal is to increase the percentage of students in kindergarten through Grade 9 who meet or exceed expectations in writing.

The third is to increase the percentage of students in kindergarten through Grade 9 who meet or exceed expectations in math.

Fleet said focusing on math and English in the high school level will be one of her priorities going forward.

Only 51 per cent of Island high school graduates completed Grade 12 academic math and Grade 12 academic English.

“We have the tools to improve our students,” said Fleet. “The people in the board and in our schools are capable of doing it.”

Also announced at the meeting was a schedule of upcoming meetings and days off in Island schools.
