HGS Canada call centre lays off more than 100 people in Charlottetown

More than 100 people spent their final day on the job Monday at a call centre in Charlottetown.

HGS Canada’s services with its client, believed to be the technology giant Apple, came to an end Monday.

The closure is being called “temporary’’ by Kathy Follett-Lloyd, the company’s human resources vice-president.

However, she would not comment on if and when work may again be available at the site located in the West Royalty Business Park.

“We continue to pursue opportunities,’’ she says.

Follett-Lloyd says the staff that has been working at HGS Canada in Charlottetown will be offered first crack at any new employment at the call centre.

Some have already accepted transfers to the HGS Canada site in Montague, she adds.

“That’s an open-ended offer to all of our employees,’’ she says.

The CEO of Atelka, another call centre located in the business park, told The Guardian last month his company could absorb 80 or more people from HGS Canada.

An employee who has worked for the past 18 months with HGS Canada in Charlottetown says some of her co-workers have interviews scheduled with Atelka.

She called HGS “a great company’’ to work for and noted “management has been awesome.’’ She says the atmosphere are work remained upbeat over the past couple weeks. Kentucky Fried Chicken was being served up at lunch time Monday perhaps as a way to soften the blow.

The Guardian reported in February that employees at HGS Canada in Charlottetown were all informed that their jobs would end on April 14 if the company was unsuccessful in securing replacement business.

OLS, which opened a call centre in the West Royalty Business Park in 1996, was purchased by HGS Canada in 2011.
