A Charlottetown man is lucky to be alive today after his girlfriend tried to drive a knife into his chest while he slept.

"As it turned out he was quite lucky," said Sergeant Walter Vessey of Charlottetown Police Services. "The knife blade, when she (allegedly) stabbed him, struck a bone which stopped the knife from doing more damage."

It all happened in the early morning hours at an apartment on Rochford Street in Charlottetown, said Vessey. Police were called just before 10 a.m.

"The male was taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

"The two people involved in the stabbing were known to each other. They were in a relationship," said Vessey.

"The female (allegedly) had stabbed the male in the chest with a kitchen knife while he was sleeping," he said.

Marlo Docherty, 41, was arrested and taken to court to be charged with attempted murder. She is now in Sleepy Hollow jail awaiting a hearing Wednesday about her status.
