SUMMERSIDE – Sport Chek is expanding its operations to Summerside.

The national sporting goods and apparel retailer is in the process of building its first outlet in Summerside at the County Fair Mall.

The chain is set to open April 24 in 13,500 square feet of space in the recently redesigned section of the mall, which was done to accommodate the adjoining Giant Tiger outlet that’s set to open April 12.

Brendon Arnold, communications manager for Sport Chek, said the company sees Summerside as an opportunity for growth.

“We’re trying to extend our reach a little bit,” said Arnold.

“We’re trying to get into some different communities that don’t have a Sport Chek nearby. The drive from Charlottetown to Summerside is a bit further than people would generally like to go to purchase their sporting equipment and active lifestyle apparel,” he said.

“But we really want to get into Summerside. It’s a great market.”

The number of employees at the new location should range from 25 to 30 people, including part-time and full-time.

Arnold said the hiring process is underway and they hope to have their lineup ready in about one month’s time.

“We do a lot of training with our employees, whether that be the customer service experience or product knowledge … they are fully equipped to handle any questions and provide customers with the best experience possible,” he said.
