The Delta Prince Edward hotel in Charlottetown is getting a $6-million makeover.
Work has begun on extensive renovations to the hotel's guestrooms that begins at the third floor and extends all the way up to the 10th floor.
Betty-Anne Morrison, director of sales and marketing for the hotel, says three floors are currently out of commission and another two floors will be out of commission by the middle of February.
And, when they talk about renovations, that means everything is being redone - the hallways, the bathrooms, the walls and the rooms themselves. When all is said and done, each room in the hotel will feature all new furniture.
"We're getting completely renovated and that is causing some disruption. At one point, we'll have more than 100 rooms out of order,'' Morrison said.
The Charlottetown Delta was informed $6 million in renovations were coming in December while work began Jan. 6. Renovations at the Delta in Halifax are also in the company's plans but the priority is getting work done in Charlottetown first due to the existence of the adjoining P.E.I. Convention Centre and the large number of bookings the hotel has beginning in May. That's why all renovations have to be completed by April.
The renovations are designed to give the guestrooms a sleek, contemporary modern design which are also in line with Delta's new brand design.
"It's all about functionality, versatility, comfortability and beauty. We're not just talking about skirts and curtains here. We're talking completely new beds.''
The bathrooms are all being renovated to provide rooms with a spa-like setting, using spa-type lighting and custom stone. The larger rooms will all feature walk-in showers and larger than average sinks.
Morrison is particularly excited about the new smart desks each room will feature, geared for the typical business traveller. Whatever device the client happens to have will have a built-in plug-in. Those preparing power-point presentations for a conference will be able to hook into the television in the room to view their presentation.
"Everything will be right there built into the desk for the business traveller. Audio, video data for any device (will be able to plug in).''
All rooms will feature the latest in high-speed wireless connections.
Beds will be built on platforms and rooms will feature built-in luggage racks.
Morrison said the existence of the new convention centre isn't the only reason extensive renovations are taking place but "it certainly helped put us on the map.''
The $6-million price tag does not include renovations which took place last year on the main floor with the lobby and restaurant.
When floors three through 10 are completed by the end of April, only the mezzanine level (second floor) will be left on the to-do list.
Morrison said those changes are scheduled to take place during the first quarter of 2015.
Work wrapped up last year on the $24.3-million convention centre project which enables the hotel to host large meetings and conventions within the region, featuring a combined 59,000 square feet of meeting and event space that can accommodate as many as 1,500 delegates.
