Charlottetown resident Laurent Beaulieu has announced he is a candidate for council in Ward 1 in the November municipal election.
Beaulieu resides in downtown Charlottetown with his husband of 40 years and their dogs.
Throughout his involvement in municipal affairs, Beaulieu says he is well aware of the many needs and challenging facing the fast-changing ward with its diverse population. He is involved in volunteer work with several organizations and is spokesman for the Charlottetown Downtown Residents Association (CDRA).
“My goal as councillor will be to bring the administration of our city into the open, involving all residents, listening to their concerns and finding solutions to improve our quality of life in Ward 1,’’ Beaulieu said in a news release.
Beaulieu has strongly advocated in opinion pieces and letters to the editor in The Guardian for an open city budget process. He also advocated for the protection of the green urban space at Water and Prince streets.
He said with his past years of work experience, he has accumulated a wealth of knowledge on diverse social issues.
Beaulieu said as a councillor, he will use that knowledge to serve the interests of residents and businesses in the ward.
Beaulieu, a university graduate who is fluently bilingual, has a long career in public service with the federal government, working in international trade, immigration and cultural and public affairs. He has also managed programs internationally and in Canada.
“This election is about the people of Ward 1. It is about listening, acting and being accountable,’’ he said.
Beaulieu is the second candidate to throw his name in the hat for Charlottetown’s November municipal election. In December, Al Douglas declared his intention to seek the mayor’s seat.
