A 14-year-old boy is safe after firefighters and police teamed up to get the boy off frozen ice near the North River causeway Wednesday.
Queens RCMP Const. Cindy Bowring spent 15 minutes shouting to the boy, trying to coax him to come to shore.
“I never heard him say anything back to me…he was just standing there,’’ says Bowring.
“I just think he didn’t realize the dangers that were involved.’’
Bowring notes the boy was standing on the ice very close to open water.
Firefighters eventually went to the teen and pulled him along the ice to shore on a floatation device.
Charlottetown Police Services spoke to the young man when he reached shore, but they were not willing to comment on the incident.
So it is unclear why the boy was on the ice.
Bowring says the teen, who was wearing a winter coat, toque and gloves, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for precautionary reasons.
“It’s a perfect time to remind citizens of the danger of venturing near open water,’’ she says.
