The City of Charlottetown wants to remind the public that pets need to be kept on a leash.

Some pet owners have been allowing their pets to run in city parks without a leash, specifically at Victoria Park in the wooded areas.

The dog control bylaw states that anyone who lets their pet run at large within the boundaries of the city is guilty of an offense.

Anyone who commits an offence under the Dog Control Bylaw can be fined between $100 and $500 for a first offence, between $200 and $1,000 for a subsequent offence and/or imprisonment for up to 90 days.

A free dog park in the city is located off of Acadian Drive in Hillsborough Park.

The fenced-in area offers approximately 27,000 square feet of open green space for dogs to enjoy off-leash activity.

The park has separate play areas for large and small breed dogs. The dog park is open seven days per week from 8 a.m. until dusk. For more information, click here

There is also a dog park at the P.E.I. Humane Society and an unofficial off-leash dog area at Upton Farm.
