Cindy Day says P.E.I. could be in for fair bit of snow this week

P.E.I. is in for a good bit of snowfall in the coming days, but like much of the winter it will lack staying power, says Cindy Day.

“Even if you don’t like the snow falling from the sky it will not stick around much,’’ says Day, chief meteorologist with SaltWire.

She is forecasting 15 to 20 cm of snow falling Friday night and into Saturday. Snow will continue Saturday with an additional 5 cm.

Heavier snowfall could come Tuesday with possibly “considerably more’’ than 15 to 20 cm of the white stuff falling on P.E.I., she says.

Still, by mid-week, Day does not expect much more total accumulation of snow on the ground than 10 to 15 cm.

Then a little boost in temperature later in the week “should clear that out.’’

Day notes Prince Edward Island has had a winter with little snow cover most of the season.

Snowfalls have often been followed this season by warmer weather and rain, melting and washing away much of the snow.

Day adds in at least a few cases, there was just a matter of a degree or two between the Island receiving heavy snowfall rather than a good downpour of rain that came.

“We haven’t been able to hang on to that snow for any great length of time,’’ she says.

Day adds with the sun getting stronger in March, and with little snow cover, any further snowfall this month, barring a major dumping, will likely not have any great staying power.
