The City of Charlottetown’s sustainability officer received an honour from the Ellen’s Creek Watershed Group on Monday night.

Ramona Doyle was presented with the “Brookie Award’’ minutes before city council went into its monthly public meeting.

The award was created by the watershed group as an award of excellence to a person, organization or business demonstrating commitment and leadership in promoting urban watershed health. The award is named after brookie, an informal name for brook trout, in recognition of the correlation between watershed health and the health of its brook trout population.

“Ramona has been instrumental in addressing environmental issues impacting watersheds within the city of Charlottetown from storm water control to fish passage, to reducing the impact of development on fish habitat,’’ said Norman Dewar, co-ordinator for the watershed group.

The award winner must meet one or more of the following criteria: increase the awareness of the importance of watershed stewardship in the city either by actions or through planned publicity; make significant contributions to watershed health within the watershed or occasionally, in exceptional circumstances, within other Island watersheds or all Island watersheds; and make a direct or in-kind financial contribution to the work of the watershed group.

Mayor Clifford Lee said there is no doubt Doyle is committed to the environment.

“She has a passion for her work and is dedicated to making Charlottetown a more sustainable city,’’ Lee said.

The Brookie Award is a 21x9 image that captures the beauty of the brook trout. The image is licensed from Sean Landsman, a local award-winning photographer and Charlottetown resident.
