Basketball P.E.I. honours its best

Basketball P.E.I held its first annual awards presentations this week in Charlottetown.
UPEI standouts Doug McKinney and Susanne Canvin of Charlottetown were recognized as senior athletes of the year, receiving A.D.L./Sport P.E.I Certificates of Achievement.
The junior athletes of the year were Summerside athletes Catherine Strongman and Mike Hardy, while awards were also given out in age specific categories. Jacob Simmons and Tessa Stammberger, from Belfast and Kensington respectively, were recognized in the bantam category, while Andrew Brawn and Jamie MacLean, also both from Summerside, were the winners in the mini division.
Summerside’s Rob Anderson was named top official, while Jared Cheverie of Charlottetown won the coaching award.
Basketball P.E.I also Gary Dunning as the president of the association.

McKinney had a banner season with the Panthers, averaging 16.8 points per game, recording a 7.4 rebounding average. He was top scorer at the Be One All-Canadian weekend, and was invited to closed tryouts for the men’s national team.
Canvin was the top rookie with UPEI. She was the recipient of the Canada Basketball Scholarship in her senior year in high school.
Strongman was the captain of the under-15 provincial team that competed at the nationals in Vancouver. She was an all-star at the Halifax Bluenose event, leading the team in assists.
Hardy, a member of the under-17 provincial team, is recognized for his versatility and excellent leadership abilities. A hard-working, competitive player, his own skills improved appreciably over the season.
Simmons was the best under-14 player in the province this past season. Hard working, coaching and passionate about the game, he was one of the top players at the Eastern Canadian bantam championships. He led his Belfast team to a provincial championship and was selected to play on the midget boys’ team that competed at the nationals in Quebec.
Stammberger helped her under-14 provincial bantam team to a respectable 2-2 record at the Easterns in Montreal, and was the strongest junior high player out of Kensington AA last season. She played a key role in the bantam Sting’s provincial tournament win, also competin g at the Justin Coward event in Halifax last spring.
Brawn led the East Prince mini A boys to victory at the Sussex invitational, where he was also MVP. At the Kennebecasis Valley AA tournament, he scored 35 points in five shifts. He also led East Prince to its fourth straight provincial championship.
MacLean led the East Prince Sting team to the provincial title, helping the girls win at the Justin Coward in Halifax, where she was tournament MVP.
Anderson is considered one of the province’s best officials, acting also as an educator and mentor.
Cheverie coached the juvenile boys to the nationals in Quebec and is part of the UPEI men’s Panthers coaching staff.
