P.E.I. drops to 5th place among women in legislature Breaking News print this article
The Guardian

P.E.I. has dropped to fifth place among provinces and territories in terms of percentage of women in it’s legislatures, states the most recent research by the P.E.I. Coalition for Women in Government .
The coalition has just completed it’s annual tabulations regarding women in Canadian Legislatures.
In April 2007, P.E.I. briefly held the top spot in Canada in terms of the percentage of women in it’s legislature, with 25.6 per cent, where it remains today. In the past two and a half years, other provinces have been electing more and more women, moving P.E.I. steadily down to the number five spot. Manitoba, at 32.1 per cent, is the only jurisdiction to currently have more than 30 per cent women in its legislature.
All of the jurisdictions have increased the percentage of women in their legislatures in the past two and a half years, with the exception of Nunavut, where the number of women dropped, and P.E.I. and Yukon, which have remained the same.
The average percentage of women in provincial/territorial legislatures has increased from 18.2 per cent in April, 2007 to 21.4 per cent.
“We are pleased that P.E.I. is in the top five jurisdictions in Canada in terms of the percentage of women in the legislature, and there is still much work to be done to have a legislature that is representative of gender in our population,” says
“Having more women elected will bring more diversity of experience to the decision-making table, increasing the potential for policy and programs that speak to women’s experience and lives,” says coalition co-ordinator Kirstin Lund.
“To carry on the movement towards goals set by all four provincial parties in the 2007 election, the P.E.I. Coalition for Women in Government hopes to continue to encourage and support political parties to nominate at least 9 women in the next Provincial election, set for 2011," Lund said.

Rainmaker from PEI writes: What…is this a race?
Who wins…the ones who have all women members first?
What an absolutely dumb headline. And insulting to all male members who are made look like they stole - or do not deserve - their position.

To Dear Rainmaker from pei writes: I understand why you feel offended. It is not very nice to think that your power is being taken away from you as a male. It is how I, as a female, see it when I notice that there are men ruling without understanding the female point of view. We would do well to have representation by population. Hey! wait....Isn't that what we were supposed to have in this country? Oh yeah. PEI is different. We are underpopulated for our representation. And.....what is the ratio of men to women in PEI???? Women do pay taxes now, you know.

Rainmaker from PEI writes: Women have a different point of view? LOL.

When women want an advantage, they say they are different. And when they want an advantage, they say they are the same as men. And if a man says women are different, or the same, he catches it.

No wonder men high-maintenance women. Really, how do you expect to ever be taken seriously?

Pie in the face from PE writes: Not that present day is a reflection, but, it is quality not a gender issue that should determine who sits in office. Ask me, there are a few women who should walked out of our current legislature.

marcella arsenault from charlottetown, pei writes: Doesn't this paper have an editor? It's bad enough that your reporter needs English grammar upgrades, but it's mind boggling that an editor would overlook this obvious grammatical error.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
