Tourism plan for 2010 builds on five priorities
The Guardian
The 2010 tourism plan for Prince Edward Island will build on five key priorities, the annual meeting of the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. was told in Charlottetown on Friday.
The five key tourism priorities include the growth of the meetings and conventions sector, golf exposure, culinary partnerships, cultural redevelopment and the next phase in the Integrated Tourism Solution (ITS).
The plan was unveiled by Tourism P.E.I. and the Tourism Advisory Council. This joint effort to launch planning details in the fall means that industry knows the strategic direction of Tourism P.E.I. coming into the new year and can adapt their own products and marketing to leverage the plan where appropriate.
“Research has continually refined our strategy and, in 2010, we will address our soft visitation periods through product development and marketing,” said Tourism Minister Valerie Docherty.
As part of TIAPEI’s annual meeting, the tourism industry was presented with the overall direction Tourism P.E.I. will take in planning for the 2010 season.
“This is only the second time ever that we have been able to bring the annual tourism plan to industry in the fall of the year,” said Kevin Murphy, chair of the Tourism Advisory Council of P.E.I.
“This joint effort of Tourism P.E.I. and TAC to shift the planning cycle means that industry knows the strategic direction of Tourism P.E.I. coming into the new year and can adapt their own products and marketing to leverage the plan where appropriate.”
Prince Edward Island lacks a bigger venue to host larger conventions. A new convention centre planned for the Charlottetown waterfront next to the Delta Prince Edward will double the convention space and accommodate growing numbers in the meetings and convention business.
While Tourism P.E.I. continues to strengthen the soft visitation periods and markets, it’s important to concentrate on those markets that have already demonstrated the potential to foster further growth. Golf continues to be an important market for P.E.I. and Tourism P.E.I. is committed in continuing to grow the PEI brand through the Golf Channel partnership and events like the International Couples Golf Festival.
The theme for 2010 will concentrate on the “year of culinary.” A newly created Culinary Alliance has been established to facilitate the development of innovative and sustainable food industry partnerships, culinary experiences and promotional programs.

So In Other Words NO CHANGES from PEI writes: GOLF, CULINARY and a Convention Centre!
Don't you think it's past time the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I came up with NEW IDEAS in making PEI more inviting and intriguing to Tourists?
GOLF and FINE DINING is OLD NEWS! How many different items can one add to culinary menus?
How many Tourists actually come to PEI to GOLF?
And just exactly what does culinary partnerships, cultural redevelopment pertain to? Could you possibly elaborate on both? And what is the total of amount of Island Tax Payers' dollars that are going into these far from unique plans?
How well did Golf and Culinary work last year?

I want to know why all the tourism research is going to UPEI, along with tons of other marketing research projects.
UPEI should stick with the clinical research and leave the marketing research to the private sector.
Is the reason UPEI is getting this research is because Valarie Docherty was connected to this institution.
I am all for UPEI getting some reseach but to be so greedy that they're taking the bread and butter out of the mouths of the private sector is very troubling to me. It reeks of politicial patronage to me.

Lets be clear from Charlottetown, PE writes: It would not make any difference if you put Buckingham Palace on the waterfront, the convention center will NEVER pay for its self. It might provide quick bucks to those bleeding the government on this same old song and dance but the taxpayer will be on the hook forever. What we need is a rejuvination of our agricultural sector as well as the fishery. Think outside the Charlottetown city limits body politic , think rural PEI! Let's do something for the average citizen, stop selling off our birthright and focus on the real people.

Eleanor Dunn from Ottawa, Ontario writes: I like to visit PEI and did so again this past September, bringing five other adult members of my family with me. We rented a cottage at Rice Point and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I respond to the surveys re tourism which are sent to me by UPEI as I think what they are doing is a worthwhile exercise. Like everyone else I get a lot of junk mail but I never delete the UPEI surveys. I aslso access the Guardian through National Newswatch website and enjoy reading about what's happening on my favorite island. Also enjoy the comments from Islanders about events of the day. Plan to return in August 2010 for about 4 weeks. I like the pace of life and the friendliness of the people -- that's what keeps bringing me back.
