Steve Miller Band coming to Summerside Breaking News print this article
DAVE STEWART
The Guardian

The Steve Miller Band, which released its first new album in almost 20 years in 2008, is coming to Credit Union Place in Summerside on Friday, June 4, at 8 p.m.
Tickets for the concert go on sale Saturday, Dec. 5.
The promoter responsible for bringing Miller to P.E.I. is none other than David Carver, the man behind the successful outdoor concerts in Charlottetown — Black Eyed Peas/Pussycat Dolls and Aerosmith.
Carver contacted Miller’s agent a month ago after attending the band’s show in Las Vegas.
“As soon as the show was over I knew I was going to contact the agent,’’ Carver told The Guardian in a telephone interview Thursday from Vancouver. “It was just a great show.’’
Miller’s Summerside concert is part of a brief tour through Atlantic Canada. The band also has dates booked at the Halifax Metro Centre (Saturday, June 5), Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook, N.L. (Monday, June 7) and Mile One Centre in St. John’s, N.L. (Tuesday, June 8).
Carver promises the Steve Miller Band will return with its signature sleek blues-rock sound that made Miller’s music so popular on hits like ‘The Joker’, ‘Fly Like An Eagle’, ‘Book of Dreams’ and ‘Take the Money and Run’, songs that continue to play on classic rock stations.
Carver said the Atlantic Canadian tour is Miller’s first since 1993.
The Steve Miller Band had limited peak commercial success but the ongoing popularity of the band can’t be challenged. In 1978, ‘Greatest Hits 1974-78’ was released. That album would go on to sell 18 million copies worldwide, 13 million in the U.S. alone.
Prior to the start of his 2007 tour, Miller announced that a new studio album was in the works, Loose Tether. The track ‘Truth About the Lies’ was co-written with Bruce Hornsby.
Miller’s other claim to fame is being the godson of the Les Paul, who died Aug. 12 at 94. Paul created the Gibson Les Paul guitar and is a member of the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
Carver said finding the right venue on P.E.I. wasn’t hard.
“Credit Union Place is a great new venue. There’s nothing better than being able to see a rock ’n’ roll concert in a new venue,’’ the promoter said of the 4,000-seat arena.
As for Carver’s plans going forward, he doesn’t see himself trying to bring another big outdoor show to P.E.I., explaining the the committees behind the Festival of Lights and the inaugural Cavendish Beach Music Festival last summer are doing just fine.
“They said they had 40,000 through the gates for the country concert (Cavendish) and that’s more than we had at Aerosmith. They did that going up against the likes of Bon Jovi and AC/DC in Moncton,’’ he said. “They seem to be better at it than I am. The province seems to have a good partnership (with those committees).’’

RG from PEI writes: I wasn't impressed with them when I saw them in Calgary this summer for free, so no way am I paying $70 to go see them.

They played a bunch of no name songs I'd never heard of until the last 2 or 3 and had the backup singer singing most songs.

I actually like their music, but if that show was how they usually play live, I have no interest in this concert at all.

Doug from Charlottetown, PEI writes: This should be a pretty good show. Steve Miller band has always been one of my favorite bands and i heard their new album is pretty good.

Glad it's in Summerside too. I d much rather drive 45 minutes and watch a concert at the Credit Union Place than the Civic Centre.

How it is... from Charlottetown, PE writes: I'd love to go see them, but I'd finding it hard to spend $70 on a Steve Miller Band concert... You could spend the same amount to see a decent concert with a couple of headliners for that price, not just one. This will be a game time decision. Of course the price would be this high for a Carver production... We've gotta pay for him to take more trips to Vegas to realize that a band like Steve Miller had a bunch of hits in the 70's, and one horrible song - Abracadabra - in the 80's. How did this replace Eye of the Tiger for the #1 spot on the charts??

Gay Guy from Summersdie, PEI writes: This is non news. Good luck in selling tickets. The band is long past and the ticket prices are way to high. Another event financial loss for Summerside.

Paulette from Charlottetown writes: Saw Steve Millar Band once before and loved them! Tickets for the Summerside concert will make a great Christmas present for my hubby, who is a big fan. CUP is a great venue. Will be glad to see the band again in Summerside.

Brad from N.S. writes: Respect for Steve Miller but I don't know how they can ask for that much for a show that's a lot cheaper or free anywhere else like county fairs or casinos. I predict they will lower ticket prices. Maybe he is a big deal here in the Maritmes, it's all over the radio here as if it were the 70's.

Stephen from Stratford, PEI writes: 70 bucks for a band that hasnt been relevant for 20 years. Doesnt he remember the Alanis concert, a big singer back in her day, only about 5 years out of the scene? It bombed. Granted, Steve Miller would make an entertaining concert, but not at that price. What is Carver trying to prove? $25.00 tops.

Doug from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Its funny how music fans on PEI want to have good Acts come to the Island but yet they consistently complaiin about the price. At the exact same time, they'd hop in their cars and go to Moncton and pay $40 for the Bridege, $30 for gas, $100 for a hotel and not complain one bit - other than to complain while they are their that PEI can't bring in any good Acts.

Stephen from Stratford, PEI writes: To Doug,
No one is complaining about the act. No is complaining that Steve Miller isnt and good. I think everyone is pretty excited. People are complaining that the price does not suit the act that is coming. The price they want for these tickets is par with the acts of today with an opening act that is a popular up and coming act. Like someone said up above, who wants to pay 70.00 for a band that has not been relevant for 20 years that is being supported by unknowns, especially when hes doing gigs for free elsewhere. We all know Steve doesnt set the price of the tickets

WTF???? from pe writes: Isn't he the same promoter that posters were up in arms that the government didn't blindly give money to last year without being able to know who he was booking?

Bill from PE writes: As far as I can tell, the reason that the 70s bands are still drawing crowds is the fact that the 70s had the best music, no comparison to Alanis Morrisette, I can't believe that somebdoy would even think to make that comparison. GEEZE.
Come on now people, if you can't afford to pay the price, don't go.
I believe that 70.00 is not that bad of a price to see a music icon. People thought that it was crazy why he would get Aerosmith to perform and invest money for them to come, but when they played, man they played. It was an awesome show, sure a few conveniences could have been a little better, like the bathroom facilities and the arrangement of the low price ticket holders being allowed to get a closer, better view of the acts. But all in all, I for one absolutely enjoyed the show to it's fullest. I will be there, and so will anybody who has a true respect for the music and these great bands.
CHEERS PEOPLE.

Remember the Beach Boys from Pe writes: The same comments were made on this website last summer when the Beach Boys were announced for the CUP. Everyone said it was too expensive for a bunch of old guys past their prime. Well, guess what? There was a good turn out for the Beach Boys and this concert will be just a big. If you can't swing $70.00, don't go...but quit crying. There are lots of other people out there that will shell out. It's already been proven that the market can bear this price.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
