Health and Social Services Minister Doug Currie was confronted by emotional advocates for the Alzheimer Society in the legislature Thursday, who were frustrated with the minister for refusing to commit to funding for the organization during question period.
The group of advocates was in the public gallery Thursday watching the day’s proceedings after being invited to attend by the Opposition.
Opposition Leader Olive Crane peppered Currie with questions about why the non-government organization receives no funding from the province, despite the services it delivers.
“You actually do not give this group any core funding. All their request is for is $30,000. You have a finance minister that’s willing to provide two wine experts to the province. Will you reconsider their application for core funding,” Crane asked during question period.
“Your budget for Social Services and Seniors, if my memory serves me correctly, is 118 million bucks. My question to you is, do you have $30,000 for the great work that this group does? Our aging population is increasing and we all know that the number of people being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia is only going to increase.”
But Currie said he could not commit to any amount of funding for any group in a snap decision on the floor of the legislature. He said there are procedures in place for funding requests.
But the Alzheimer Society has long been seeking funding through the proper channels. It put in a request for $30,000 last April, but it has not received a response.
That’s why, after question period — just as the minister was heading out of the chamber to announce his Health P.E.I. bill, some members of the society and other concerned citizens stopped Currie in his tracks and confronted him with their concerns.
“We’re here to fight for the rights of the dementia (patients) and those with Alzheimer’s and the caregivers in their homes today that need support from their government and they’re not receiving any,” Beverly Acorn Lemieux told Currie.
“We put in our request in April for $30,000 to help run the respite program at the Alzheimer Society . . . we were asking for an answer today and we got nothing. We got the runaround.”
Acorn Lemieux also brought up the government’s recent creation of two positions within the Liquor Control Commission to help choose
alcohol.
She said she was floored when she found out those positions were deemed appropriate to fund while the Alzheimer Society’s request for money is still in limbo.
“I cannot believe $50,000 to choose wine and we can’t give caregivers support in their homes? . . . It’s a shame. A shame,’’ she said.
Fran Handrahan was also among those who confronted the minister in the hallway of the legislature Thursday.
“You came running to me, telling me all the terrible things the Conservatives were doing — three or four times you were at my house telling me how terrible it was, but here I am,” Fran Handrahan told Currie, choking back tears.
“Maybe they squandered the money and maybe they didn’t but that’s what I’m paying for.”
Currie told them he would sit down with them and discuss their request for funding. But he said he would not commit to a funding arrangement when confronted in the legislature.
“I’m not able to make a financial commitment on the floor of the house but we’ll continue to work with the Alzheimer’s (Society),” Currie told the emotional advocates.
“I certainly have a great appreciation and respect for the toll and the commitment that you make as caregivers and family members living with dementia (endure) so I certainly will continue to work with you and hopefully we will see a provincial strategy.”
“Very soon,” Acorn Lemieux responded as Currie hurried away.

Marie O'Shea from Glenfinnan, P.E.I writes: I am appaled that a measley $30,000 was not given to the Alzheimer Society. One cannot speak for those of us who have been caregivers, as you need to be there and done that to really appreciate what we have been through. Any help whatsoever would be appreciated. Shame on you, there will be another election in the future and we won't forget.

Quiet Observer from Charlottetown, PEI writes: ...as Currie hurried away...

What a coward. The fifth floor hadn't prepared him with his script to deal with this one.

Now Currie will come back and made a grand announcement of funding to the Alzheimer's Society and play it as if he and the Liberals are big heroes.

We will remember the facts - Olive Crane brought this forward. The Liberals have refused them funding. Only for the Opposition bringing this forward would anything be happening.

John B. from PEI writes: Thanks Fran and friends, Trust me it will be a different matter when some of Mike Curries own family are diagnosed with Alzheimers , The progress on your plight and request will be immediately completed.. I am very well aware of the avenues of Alzheimers to the people that have gotten it and the family and care givers... Been there already 3 times in 1 family.... still 2 alive,,, I support your efforts and Thank You again for your continuing work in this group....

Wayne MacKinnon from Marshfield, P.E.I. writes: This is another example of the lack of compassion and concern for our aging population. These people worked hard to build our province and paid lots of taxes in the process. Now, when they these folks are asking for a little assistance in their time of need, they are being ignored.

When you look at the Fifth floor friends of Ghiz, who are to recieve pensions of 2 years of pension for every year they are in power, this is not fair or justifiable. Not to mention the triple digit salaries and expense accounts they recieve as compensation.

I hope my fellow Islanders will stand up and support all Islanders in need, because their situation could change just as rapidly and they could be in a similiar situation.

The number of seniors laying in hospital beds waiting to find a nursing home to care for them in their last days with dignity is appalling and heart wrenching.

No one can realize the stress caregivers go through unless one has been there and done that. Any monies that will help these people is well worth it. Don't forget another election will be rolling around.
Shame, shame.

All About Priorities from pei writes: It's all about priorities isn't it? A government that can afford to spend money on wine tasters and dish it out in spades to the Irvings, but can't afford to pay for a cancer drug such as Avastin or provide the Alzheimer's group with what is really a measly amount they're asking for.

My mother has Alzheimer's, thankfully not in this province. I know the devastating effect it has on family all too well. Dig i9nto your pockets Mr Minister and give the group the money. We can taste our own wine.

Unbelievable from PEI writes: I watched the Legislature Sitting yesterday and listened to Olive Crane ask Minister Currie at least five times if he would commit to the $30 thousand funding for the Alzheimer Society! Currie continued every time he was asked to ramble on and avoid the committment!

The answer he gave Fran Handrahan yesterday was the same put off he gave Olive Crane in the Legislature so I certainly will continue to work with you and hopefully we will see a provincial strategy.” Hopefully and Work With You doesn't give this Society a committment of the Funding they Desperately Need! A Cop Out!

Our Government seems to be able to supply Funding for everything BUT what Islanders Desperately, Critically, Emminently need! NO Liberal Vote From Me Come Next Election and maybe never again after what I've witnessed taking place this term!

This Government's Disregard for Islanders' Needs, Health and Well Being is TRULY SHOCKING! Especially given the Funding they've allocated to so many Businesses, Corporations, and Unnecessary Events and Programs while ignoring Islanders' Priorities and Constant PLeas for assistance!

Daughter of Alzheimer's from pei writes: I know the devastating effect a diagnosis of Alzheimer Disease can have on an entire family, and how much we need counselling, support groups, day respite and any other supports we can get. However, the very tiny staff of the Alzheimer Society are stretched to the limit, working long hours, and giving of their own time often to ensure no family is left in a lurch. Pity that the sitting government sees only that they can put up more nursing homes or paint them, when there is a long, long, long journey of 36 hour days for caregivers for almost 12 years before a dad or mom goes into nursing home care. I am afraid Currie doesn't 'get it'. I think Ms. Crane does. Let me see. 2500 people in the province have dementia. Every family has 4-6 people and every person diagnosed has friends and every family member has friends. Wouldn't it be something if the government was defeated because they wouldn't listen to the Alzheimer Society and everyone voted against them because of it. Interesting.

Steve from PEI writes: Even if another party couldn't do better I'm sure they would at least show more compassion, interest, concern for Islanders' needs and give more than a deaf ear or lip service to their requests.

I've never know Islanders to have to chase Ministers through the Legislature Bldg. to try to get a word with them! And I've never known the Opposition Party having to ask a question five times and more and still not receive anything that resembled an answer!

We're living in the Present and looking towards the future!

And it looks to me like the Convervatives are learning from their Past and Working for a Brighter Future!
They were voted out last time because Islanders thought Binns didn't do enough, spent too much! I think most Islanders now realize Binns did MORE in the first year of Power than the Liberals have done in two!

And I'd like to do the research on the Binns' Government spending over eight years! I'd bet if we compared year to year we'd find out it was much less!

But for every remark yesterday in the house regarding lack of accomplishments the Liberals tried to blame it on the Conservatives even when the Conservatives weren't in power! Go Figure?

Priorities first from pei writes: What in the name of heaven is happening ? With all the bad publicity this government has asked for, and been given, one would think they'd avoid more controversy as if their very lives depended on it. And yet they ask for more backlash by hiring wine experts with our tax dollars while avoiding yet another important health care issue. And folks, stop moaning about what the previous government did. That's not going to help in the least. You're just giving this government an out when they need one. You gave the Binns government what you thought they deserved - you voted them out. The fact that you got something worse was an unforseen event. You can't cure the current government by treating the former to more bitter pills. Concentrate on the living patient - this Liberal government that hasn't got a clue how to repay the voters that elected them. They have yet to learn that health and education come first. Those two expenditures are what keeps this country running. And the group this government is forcing to beg for funds is one covered under the heading Health .

Donna from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Anyone who saw the TV Compass clip of Minister Currie interacting with the Alzheimers advocates has witnessed the fundamental problem with the Ghiz government. They're insular and brittle, with a power-acquired veneer that makes them incapable of relating to everyday people and life. A bunker mentality prevails.

During the encounter, Minister Currie was visibly uncomfortable. He demonstrated no empathy or sincere concern for the issue, only a visibly transparent attempt to manoeuvre himself out of the situation and away from those he felt were accosting him.

I'm torn between anger at his dismissal of those admirable women, exercising their democratic right, and profound pity for him and his lack of humanity.

Minister Currie has evolved into the consummate political animal - he now sees everything through the prism of political expediency. What a sad human being.

jane of the island from charlotettown, PE writes: They aren't wine tasters, it is a wine buyer and a beer/liquor buyer. The liquor commission is actually trying to increase sales which will make MORE money. That is what businesses do.

I am surprised that people are confusing the issue of funding of a social group with a business decision that will actully bring more money into the coffers. You can already see the difference the beer/liquor buyer is making -can't wait for the wine buyer. Will keep my business on the island, and the tax and profit on those sales on the island

Proper channels from PE writes: I can understand that people are wanting compassion for this organization. My own father has Alzheimer's and it would be great to receive help. However, I also understand that there are countless organizations on PEI that do similar kind of work in the health field, whether it be going to people's homes to help them or creating awareness. By this, I mean diabetes associations, heart and kidney associations, autism, paraplegic, the list can go on and on. Does every organization deserve to have at least $30,000 for core funding? Absolutely! Can every organization realistically get this core funding? Well, if you look at it from a realistic viewpoint, I'm sorry but no. Health funding is limited. And comparing it with the liquor jobs is comparing apples and oranges, they're not coming from the same sector.

And thinking that everyone who steps into Province House can address the Minister and ask for money and get it, well imagine if everyone tried that one! For one thing, groups would be lining up to get their turn to ask for money. And you can't ask a minister to juggle his budget on the spur of the moment. If he said yes to them, he would have to take away $30,000 from someone else once he got back to his office. And what is meant by proper channels in this article, did they send a letter with a budget or did they apply to an existing program? Quite a difference between the two.

Does he not think that doing this may well cost him some female votes? I dont know if he feels poorly about women but at times it may appear that way. Thats her job to ask questions and expect a reasonable and respectful answer. Isnt it?
With Alzheimers being so prevalent a mere 30,000 is probably not a lot to give for the government. I hope that it is reconsidered.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
