Tim Ogilvie
Tim Ogilvie to carry Tory banner for Tories in Malpeque Breaking News print this article

The Guardian

The Malpeque Conservative Association announced today that Dr. Tim Ogilvie has accepted the nomination to serve as the Conservative Party of Canada’s candidate in the next federal election.
“We are thrilled to have a candidate of Dr. Ogilvie’s stature stand for election and I know that his experience and grasp of the challenges and opportunities facing the residents of Malpeque makes him the voice we need in Ottawa,” said Malpeque Conservative Association vice president Jamie Ballem.
Ballem says the party’s constitution provides a set period of time for candidates to come forward once the electoral district is released.
“The party undertook a search process this fall to identify potential candidates able to commit themselves to a candidacy. We are fortunate indeed that Dr. Ogilvie is prepared to invest the time and energy needed for a successful campaign,” said Ballem.
Liberal Wayne Easter is the riding’s sitting Member of Parliament. No date has been set for a federal election although there is speculation Canadian may be going to the polls in late winter.
Ogilvie is immediate past-dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at UPEI.
Previously, Ogilvie served the university as acting dean from 1998-99 and as chair of the Department of Health Management from 1990. During this time, he was also co-director of AVC's Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Ogilvie joined AVC as a founding faculty member in 1985 after serving as director, Animal Industry Services Branch of the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture and Forestry.
He received his doctor of veterinary medicine and master of science degrees from the University of Guelph and after graduation was employed in private practice in Kensington.
Ogilvie has served his community on Kensington Minor Hockey Council for several years and has been warden for St. Thomas’ Anglican Church and the Parish of New London. Tim and his wife, Lola, reside in Spring Brook. Lola is active in community outreach programs. They have two sons, Thomas and Adam who are enrolled in the Veterinary Medicine program at AVC.
Ogilvie has been a participant in the several Canadian and Atlantic Business/Trade Development Missions; including to the U.S., Poland, Japan, Spain, Scotland and China.
He has served as a member of the UPEI Senior Management Group, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and as president of the Canadian Faculties of Agriculture & Veterinary Medicine.
He was recently honoured by having the AVC Vet Camp, Canada’s only veterinary camp of its kind, named “The Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp” during its recent 10-year celebration.
The AVC Vet Camp also received an award for the Best Community Outreach Program in Canada by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.
Recently, he has been Chair and Member of the PEI Lobster Industry Roundtable and Member of the Wind Energy Institute of Canada.

This Conversation is Moderated. What is moderation?

Rob Mceachern from Priests pond, Pe writes: Well Wayne, it was good.
Although PEI generally sends sheep to Ottawa, Wayne knows how to get the sound bites. The only problem is the entire liberal party is caving in.
Since the betrayal of Chretien by Paul the fool Martin this party has floundered badly.
Ignatieff has clearly been rejected.
Great majorities and strong holds on power can be quickly destroyed, look at the Ghiz clown show after been handed a huge majority in the house. Now the house has been shamed like never before. And we had such hopes for the young fella.
Ogilvie is a great breath of experience entering into politics. Good luck Dr. Ogilvie.

bruce from pei writes: Well it appears that the Tories are getting ready for the next election , the the selection of Tim for their canidate in this riding. I think that he will send a message to the voters that , I am sure that some would like to hear. But it will take a lot of work to convince that the voters should give a person with no real life experience out side of the class room. It is one thing to talk the talk but it is another to walk it. Tim has spent a lot of time in front of class room with his interpretation of facts , but I would be very surprise , if he has any substance outside of the classroom. I am sure since the Tories do have a problem with people who have taught at universities such as the leader of the Liberal party , I do believe that they will have an explanation to that one. Plus Wayne has represented this area quite well over the years and he has done a very good job .

Cindy Lu from Cornwall, PE writes: Say what you want about Wayne Easter but no politician works harder than he does; he puts his all into everything that he does.
I'm sure Dr. Ogilvie is a good man but no one under the Harper government is free and able to work for the best interests of their constituents.
All the best Mr. Easter, I hope you continue to be my voice in Ottawa.

Johnnystorm from PE writes: Go get him Wayne. Wayne has done a great job representing Malpeque and will continue to do so. I would sooner have a farmer with real life experiece reoresenting me than someone who has worked in the Ivory Tower all his life.

Garth Staples from PE writes: Easter has turned the office of MP into a cauldron of false and outrageous accusations,
silly and childish antics. Remember he was the Attorney General of Canada, for a short time, and he will have to answer for what he didn't do with his mandate.

Dr Tim, a man of intelligence, integrity has given much to his community. The people will respond appropriately.

CB from PEI writes: Dr.Ogolvie seems like a great person which is wonderful. But, Mr. Easter has been the hardest working MP that I have ever witnessed. I plan to vote for Wayne again and will continue to do so.

Wait...didn't the Conservatives tell Canadians that Ignatieff and Dion were too intellectual for public life? Doesn't Dr. Ogilvie fit this description?

Pretend guy, pretend job from Charlottetown, PEI writes: So it's 'Dr. Tim' is it?

So is a vet really a doctor? Or is he a pretend doctor like the horde of Ph. D types we have at UPEI?

If that's the ruse, I predict Easter will chew him up like so many other pretenders who have showed up over the years.

With Wayne you get the full strength, real deal politician. Pretenders beware.

P.H.D. (Post Hole Digger)....

PEI is certainly lacking in representation. A reflection of our aging demographics.

Dinosaurs to represent dinosaurs. This place is becoming a FOSSIL RANCH. And Liberals and Conservatives fight over the bones left by Chretien, Martin and Harper.

Old age homes and funeral parlours are the only real steady growth business.

So as a 20-something, DOCTOR Ogilvie, tell me again why I should vote ''conservative'' when the very word means that NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE ????????

YOU'D HAVE TO BE A SHEEP TO SUPPORT STATUS QUO (ie. Easter or Ogilvie)

LC from Charlottetown, PE writes: On the basis of the Conservative position on global warming alone and Harper's actions in destroying any international consensus which will ultimately result in Prince Edward Island becoming Prince Edward Islands in a few generations is enough to opose anyone running for the Tories but am hoping that Ignatieff will also show what he will do on that issue - It is the defining issue of our generation and we must not vote for those who will not act !

stickingwithit from PEI writes: Although a welcome is needed for Tim, a warning is also needed. Wayne has done much good for this riding and he continues to do so - despite sitting in Opposition. Tim really needs to look at where he is standing and realize he is butting heads with a great, honored man who has represented us for over a decade now in Ottawa.
Nice try, Tim, but I think the people of Malpeque know what is right for them.

Talk down from pe writes: Looks like the horse doctor ( know a lot of vets that don't call themselves doctor, seems a bit aragant) gave up on the Tories provincially. Remember when he was going to run for the leadership. Seems the writting was on the wall and he didn't do well in the polling numbers ( compared to Peter Llewellyn!!).
People don't need someone to talk down to them, we need someone to fight for us, that is what Wayne does.

Look at all that Mr Mac Aulay and Gail Shea have done for their ridings.

Outsider Lookin in from pei writes: I find it quite amusing that there are so many experts here when it comes to who should be the next candidate for Malpeque. I suppose Wayne Easter has been the hardest working MP in Atlantic Canada has he for the last 20 yrs? I suppose some would work more and some less for the 125,000 per year that these folks are being paid. If most don't know it, that is nearly as much as one gets paid to rule the whole province, hence Mr. Ghiz.... And really folks what difference will either make? The Liberals will look after the Liberals and the Tories are the same .... All the others claim to be different so why don't we keep an eye on Nova Scotia to see how the newly elected NDP's get along, and who else would be a viable option? no one else is very likely to ever form a government here in Canada so electing someone from the newer parties that are available as an Option really isn't the case. I just have been trying to figure out how all the narrow minded people figure that this Country will ever operate without certain people at the helm? Who looked out for Malpeque prior to the savior (Easter) came along? Who will ever be able to replace him???? Maybe when Wayne decides to retire they can almalgamate Malpeque with Egmont or Hillsborough so that two can do the job of one.
For all of the fools out there that think one man will ever or has ever been the difference for PEI , then you had better get over it. Keep in mind that when these elected officials are handing money out in their areas, that it isn't their money yet our money, from honest taxpaying people and I am not sure why we give them all the credit for all they do, I think Joe McGuire in Egmont with his 108,000 a year pension has been and is being paid back for his service to this country, especially when we consider what we give our veterans for all they have done in the provision of our very livelyhood today.......

TA from pei writes: How disgusting that people who probably didn't put the effort into their education to even graduate from high school should attack a man on the basis that he has a phd. If you can't rise to the other persons level then its easier to knock them down to yours. I don't care what party you vote for. Stick to policies that you may or may not like. At least if you call a person names, whether it be Easter or Ogilvy, have the courage to come forward with your own name. Politically, what are the Liberal's doing to gain our vote. Right now they are contributing to the mess regarding the transfers of prisoners in Afghanistan. If they wanted to get at the truth instead of scoring political points at the expense of Canada, they would allow Ambassador Mulroney the opportunity to testify instead of blocking his appearance on Wednesday. They take the word of Coffin because it suits their political agenda but refuse to hear a person who could add a little balance to the story. Where does Wayne stand on this issue? Would he vote to allow Mulroney to appear before the Commons Committee? I'm tired of the political games on both sides. Stick with policies so when I vote the next time I can be informed before putting my X down. I don't care whether Easter is a farmer or Ogilvy is a Vet, I care about their policies and in what direction their party wants to take Canada. My Canada is neither hard right nor hard left. The party that can position itself between those points and explain how they will do it best will get my vote.

real solution from PEI writes: We need to consolidate the 4 federal ridings in tiny PEI into one.

Look at the ridings across Quebec, Ontario, and the western provinces - minimum 130,000 voters per MP.

We have around 30,000 voters per MP. There are far fewer people in our tiny ridings to choose from for a quality representative and this hurts us.

Everyone on PEI thinks that we need 4 MPs but that just dillutes our voice and gives us 4 low-quality representatives when we should have a single voice and 1 high-quality representative.

Time to consolidate the 4 federal ridings into 1. Enter the 21st century.

Attacked who? from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Note to TA: No one disparages Tim for having a PhD because he doesn't have one.

The question is whether a veterinarian is correct to call himself 'Dr.' when he is not a medical doctor. I would think Doctor as a title is now reserved for MDs.

Note to Real Solution:

Our constitution is quite rigid when it comes to allocating MPs and Senators to provinces.

I believe PEI is entitled to have as many MPs as Senators. (4) That isn't going to change soon, even if it should given population disparities.

To willingly choose fewer MPs to represent the Island would probably strike most people as foolish, if principled.

real solution from PEI writes: Good point on the PhD vs. DVM issue and the title ''Doctor''. My grandfather who passed away many years ago had a medical doctor here on PEI (who shall remain nameless) and grandpa recalled one time going to the good doctor for a consultation and was politely answering his questions with ''Yes Sir'' or ''No Sir'' and after about 3 questions the doctor interrupted him and said ''Listen Mr. So-and-so, the title is 'Doctor', not 'Sir'...'' Needless to say, my grandfather found a new medical doctor soon thereafter.

For some people the title accorded by degrees or professional accreditation (certain ranks among military officers come to mind too) seem to go to the heads of people and they use it in situations where they are simply not necessary.

My friend's father has a Ph.D. but never ever even once has he demanded anyone address him as ''Doctor'' because he isn't insecure and his chosen profession never demanded it. He studied for the degree 40+ years ago as a personal challenge to gain the knowledge but never as a means to an end and thus it never made one iota of difference to him.... He was ''Gary'' to everyone who knew him or when he introduced himself and was very unassuming. No need to be the pretentious ''raised nail'' waiting to be hammered down.

Perhaps The Guardian is merely being respectful of Tim Ogilvie's educational achievement and chosen profession, or this is the title that publicists for the Conservative Party's riding association in Malpeque have chosen to push out there (in the hopes that it dazzles the uninformed), or perhaps it is how Tim Ogilvie wishes to be addressed.

I have no idea but it it's the latter 2, I guarantee that voters in a largely rural riding will spot inflated egos or inflated life experience a mile away and the candidate will suffer for it.

And as for my desire to see our federal ridings consolidated... If the Senate of Canada is abolished and parliament evolves to a unicameral legislature, then the argument pertaining to matching seats in the House of Commons to seats in the Senate goes out the window, no?

I don't have any insecurity about PEI having decreased representation by having 1 MP versus the present 4.

Unfortunately federal politics on PEI, as with provincial politics, for too many decades has always been transactional and not transformational - who brings home the pork, versus who brings forth the best ideas.

Voters in PEI in a tiny riding such as Malpeque demand the pork and those are the results our MPs strive to provide. I would like to believe that if we had a larger constituency of voters (ie. the entire island), then perhaps our thinking would evolve to become more strategic.

One can always hope. I'm young (under 30) and frankly I don't give a darn about political pork barreling such as what Chretien did and which Harper is doing now. I demand good governance, excellent services for what I pay in taxes, and I expect that political pay offs for individuals, corporations and ridings will be kept in the last century where they belong.

If we had a single riding for all of PEI, I wonder if Tim Ogilvie would be acclaimed as the Conservative candidate, or if there might be several people with excellent qualifications who would vie for the honour and best person would win in a real race? Ditto for the Liberals and the NDP and Greens.

These tiny federal ridings on PEI, while quaint and a product of the 19th century, are a tremendous hindrance to our future progress.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
