Islanders win at national folk music awards
EDITORIAL STAFF The Guardian
OTTAWA — Prince Edward Island claimed a pair of awards at the fifth annual Canadian Folk Music Awards ceremony Saturday night in Ottawa.
Charlottetown’s Catherine MacLellan was named Solo Artist of the Year for Water in the Ground. Fellow Prince Edward Island resident Colette Cheverie took the Traditional Singer of the Year award for Hours Before Dawn.
“It’s a good thing we’re not in the Maritimes, or this might have gone to Joel,” said MacLellan, also the daughter of P.E.I. songwriting legend Gene MacLellan.
“It’s been a pretty crazy year, there’s been a lot of travelling,” said MacLellan offstage for her win for her Water in the Ground CD. “But it feels like everything is happening as it should, and the people I’ve been able to work with have been fantastic.”
Joel Plaskett of Nova Scotia, was a double winner, for contemporary album and producer of the year for his triple solo album Three.

LC from Charlottetown, PE writes: Congratulations to the very talented and amazing performers Catherine and Colette - you have done us proud! We need to ensure that PEI respects and nurtures such growing talents rather than investing in large and irrelevant large musical spectacles which do not contribute to growing our own music industry here on PEI
