Man dies in ATV crash EDITORIAL STAFF The Guardian
SOUTH GRANVILLE — One person is dead following a single-vehicle accident involving an all-terrain vehicle here on Sunday at about 2:15 p.m.
The accident occurred when the driver, who is not being identified until family has been notified, lost control of the vehicle on a dirt road, causing it to roll over.
CPR was performed at the scene before the driver was transported to Prince County Hospital where the victim was pronounced dead.
The accident is still under investigation and RCMP say alcohol was not a factor.

questioning from Stanley Bridge, PEI writes: Why do these ATV drivers not stay on their own property?
It is illegal to drive an off-road vehicle (ATV or dirt bike) on a public road.
Maybe if there was more enforcement of this problem by the police, we will have fewer accidents on public roads and possibly fewer deaths.

city resident from P.E. writes: Sorry for the family's members death , maybewe should make it manditory for drivers of atv's and off-road motorcycles to take a safety course. This the second accident of this sort. There was another accident with two 15 year olds on a dirt bike this weekend also.

JustMe from PEI writes: A very sad story and I will be praying for this mans family in their time of sorrow. I know many ppl are going to comment on here about atv's I know many people who own them and drive in that area. Most drivers are considerate and obey the rules, unfortunatly sometimes bad things happen. Let's not point blame but instead offer our support for friends and family

How it is... from Charlottetown, PE writes: People who drive ATV's off of their own property are already breaking the law. Will a mandatory course actually do anything? For those who choose to attend it, perhaps yes. The problem is that most won't bother. What we need is a legal trail system across PEI where safety can be enforced and monitored, and allow people a safe place to ride their machines similar to the trails being used for snowmobiles during the winter.
Of course the same trail system can't be used during the summer months due to walkers, bikers, etc, however another trail system would not require gravel surfaces and as much upkeep. Monitoring, and some maintenance could be provided by ATV associations that would surely be established with trail passes and registration taking care of legal requirements such as signage for the trails and roads.
If 4-wheelers could be used across the Island legally I wouldn't hesitate to get one and fit it with snow tracks for the winter assuming the Confederation trails would be open to 4-wheelers using a track system, rather than planning on buying another snowmobile in the near future.
Perhaps this is a direction that PEI might want to consider pushing towards since our tourism numbers have declined. Not saying that a huge taxpayer-backed cash infusion is needed, but if the rewards would merit the investment, then it's something to think about!

Islander from PEI writes: The ones that are driving reckless won't bother taking the safety course. Most of these vehicles aren't even registered. A trail for them is a terrible idea. PEI just isn't big enough for these machines. We don't have to bother wildlife anymore than we already are by putting a trail through fields and forested areas.
It's a sin that yet another person has lost their life by riding one of these machines. It's too bad people just didn't use them for what they were originally intended for - work not pleasure riding. Accidents can still happen but they would certainly be a lot less of them.

A friend of the man from Kensington, PEI writes: I was friends with the man who died. There are a lot of car accidents too, so every time somebody goes off their property with a car, they must be breaking the law too. For all you people worried about 4 wheelers on the road, you should be more worried about all the people out there drinking and driving. I'm also friends with the father of the 12 year old hurt on the dirt bike and if you read the paper it said that the boy was not in violation of any laws. Just because you guys didn't have them when you were younger, doesn't mean you have to pick on them now.

How it is... (again) from Charlottetown, PE writes: Islander, do you know how the Snowmobile trail system works? They have trail marshals who fine/report people who ride on the trails without a registered machine or no trail pass. If they were to implement a trail system for four-wheelers I would propose they do the same.
I am in no way blaming anyone for accidents or picking on them. It's always a shame when something like this happens. I had snowmobiles when i was younger and I would like to have one again. My issue is that the snowmobile season is so short that buying a four-wheeler just makes more sense if there was somewhere to ride it on the Island without trespassing on other peoples' properties. Sure four-wheelers are good for doing work, but they're also fun and safe when you take the proper precautions. I just think that if there was a place to ride them with speed limits, monitoring, and a system of trails that were made for being driven on, accidents would be less likely.
Besides Islander, how much wildlife do we have on PEI in the first place? People are already driving the machines, we might as well make more likely for them to stick to designated areas than all over the place.

fourwheeler from PEI from PEI writes: I myself have taken the ATV safety course and although it was helpful it isn't the answer. For those who think it's illegal for us to four wheeler off our own property where else can we? The solution is for us to do the same as every other province does make ATV trails across the island that is the only safe solution because as long as the dealers are selling ATVs people will buy them.

How it is... from Charlottetown, PE writes: So Fourwheeler, you agree with me then? In my first post i was saying that technically it is illegal to use them on someone else's property, because its trespassing, but like you said there is no other option. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a trail upwest from Alberton to Tignish for ATVs though? I would love to see trails put in place across PEI and I'd get a four-wheeler for sure instead of a skidoo. That way I could use it all year instead of just during our increasingly shorter winters.

Lindsay Best from Summerwside, PEI writes: I just wanted to clear things by saying that I was with Keith when he passed away and he Did not drive reckless and would never think of doing that. He had a medical condition and it just so happened that it was at the same time as he was fourwheeling, the spot in which it happened it was not a dangerous spot it was a flat ground clay road and no danger around. It would be greatly appreciated that you have some respect for keith and his family to not drag his name through the mud, he was responsible when he drove. And as for you people saying that if he would have driven on his own property or not private property that accidents could be avoided, that is not right, Keith puts lots of smiles on all of our faces and will never be forgotten. RIP Keith!!
