Torch relay snubs Kings County, says local MLA Breaking News print this article
PROVINCE HOUSE
BY WAYNE THIBODEAU
The Guardian

Kings County residents are extremely disappointed that they have been left out of this weekend’s Olympic torch relay, says Mike Currie.

The Kings County MLA is calling on the P.E.I. government to consider changing the route so that at least some of the eastern P.E.I. county is able to take part in the torch relay in their own district.

The torch relay comes to the province via Northumberland Ferries at Wood Islands but that is in Queens County.

Currie says that’s not fair.

“I see that Kings County and rural Prince Edward Island has been left out again by your government,” said Currie.

“I’m just wondering why you wouldn’t have went through Murray Harbour, where Brad Richards comes from, Murray River, where Brandon Gormley comes from, through Montague where the member built a new wellness centre and on into Charlottetown.

“Why couldn’t you capture some of Kings County? Why did you pick the route you did?”

But Kings County is not the only region of the province being snubbed by the Vancouver 2010 torch.

It’s also not going into West Prince.

The Olympic torch arrives in P.E.I. on Saturday.

Cultural Affairs Minister Carolyn Bertram chastised Currie’s criticism of the torch relay and called on the Conservative MLA to get on board with the celebrations.

“Obviously, if you look at the map of Canada it can’t go through every region of every province,” said Bertram.

“Get on board folks. This is a great event for our province. Get excited. Get involved.”

...More on this story in The Guardian tomorrow.

Andrew from PEI writes: It's not up to the province. The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Committee is responsible for the route.

Their mandate was to have the torch come within a one hour drive for as many Canadians as possible, and they say that mandate has been reached for 99% of Islanders.

Trevor from Charlottetown, PEI writes: And how long ago did we know that Kings County was NOT part of this? A long time ago. Lots of time to try to correct it. This is just sour grapes and politics.

Easterner from PE writes: One Island community, riiiiiiiiiiiiight. More like one community island. Did you people not know that PEI ends in the east at Stratford and the KFC on St.Peter's? My Lord, get with the program. There's a road to nowhere that goes to the Wood Islands Ferry, but that's about it. Montague, Morell, Souris and outlying communities don't exist in the eyes of townies . I thought we learned this already. :P

Shelly from PEI writes: Oh for heavens sakes! What next? If that torch covered every inch of PEI it would have to cover ever inch of every province! It would never make it to BC until 2016! Too late!! They only have a certain amount of time, I am assuming, in each province and usually they forget that PEI even exists so I think we are lucky this time!

nitpicker from Charlottetown, PEI writes: so the torch doesn't physically cross the county line known as Kings County . Who cares? Its in the vicinity. It travels a good chunk of the Island.

For Currie (who is trying to score cheap political points) and others who are getting riled up, check out the map of the torch's travels. There are lots of counties in other provinces missed too.

Mike from PE writes: Ghiz hates Rural PEI!!!

Ghiz will do anything to cause rural PEI to crash and burn.

Ghiz thinks all that matters in Cahrlottetown, The heck with the faremrs or fishermen and never mind with rural PEI.

Bertram needs to gorw up and explian why Kings Country and West prince were left out. But more importantly where ate the Government MLA's from these regions.
Do the Mla's from Kings County and from West prince not have some say in what goes on in their own Government? If this is the acse than why do even have Government MLA's.

Are the Non Cabinet MLa's just the Liberal Version of the $5000 clappers that MacKinley accused Binns of having.

Where are the MLA's?

Last time I checked, the Northumberland Ferries docked at Wood Islands....in King's County. What is all the blooming fuss about?

Not defending any politician, but how do you expect them to have a lot of sway in the route the Olympic Committee selects?

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
