Charlottetown looking forward to music and cash in 2011 Breaking News print this article

The Guardian

The City of Charlottetown has formally stated its support for the development of a bid to host the 2011 East Coast Music Association Awards, Festival and Conference.
Campbell Webster, chair of the Bid/Event Committee for the 2011 East Coast Music Awards, Festival and Conference, and Wayne Long, events development for the city, are leading Charlottetown’s bid to host the 2011 event.
Webster was unanimously selected as chair of the Bid/Event Committee by event committee members and partners at the committee’s recent inaugural meeting for the 2011 East Coast Music Awards, Festival and Conference.
Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee has declared his endorsement of Webster as Bid/Event Committee chair.
“Campbell has a long-standing successful history with the East Coast Music Association as a founding director of the ECMA, having served on its board for 12 years and conceived many of the ECMA Awards, Festival and Conference signature events, and as Chair of the successful 2001 and 2006 ECMA Awards, Festival and Conference," said Mayor Lee.
The East Coast Music Association Awards, Festival and Conference is a celebration and recognition of the East Coast music industry. In 21 years, it has grown from a one-day $1,000 event staged at a Halifax bar to a four-day international gathering, with a budget that has exceeded $1.6 million.
The East Coast Music Awards, Festival and Conference bring $3 to $5 million to the host region annually, making it one of the largest events of its kind in Canada.

Jill Macdonald from Hampton, Pei writes: More award ceremonies for singers? Jeepers, aren't there enough of these awards nights already?

It seems there is one every week.

That Guy From PEI from PE writes: Jill, its not just for singers. Its not hard to tell by your response that you've never been to the ECMA'S. That's ok, its alot of fun and you get to support your local musicians, singers, rappers, etc.

Let's not take a Harper view on things here. By that I mean 'not supporting artists' or 'the arts'. Let the ECMA's warm up the dead of winter in PEI!!!!

MUSIC IS OUR ONLY UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. :)

Paul from Victoria, BC writes: Bring it on! 2001 and 2006 were amazing events. I will be renting a suite downtown and hosting a running party all week.

Jill Macdonald from Hampton, Pei writes: If it is PEI's turn,,, does that mean we HAVE to take it? Or can we ask some other more rich city to take it on?

Craig from Long Creek, PE writes: Looking forward to it-- the 2006 show was the first I went to and had a great time-- of course Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles had something to do with that!

Hillbilly Hank from Cascumpec, PE writes: Just like anything else, the ECMAs are a waste of taxpayer dollars. Keep them away from the Island. You are right on Jill.

Pinball Wizard from Pr.Edward writes: Jill if you feel so strongly about it take it on as a petition or cause. Theres worse things that PEI could get. Lucky anyone wants to come here in winter ,
ECMAs draw mostly positive attention to PEI as well as boost the economy in a cold hard winter.

That Guy From PEI from PE writes: Oh Hillbilly and Jill......I'll be thinking of you when I'm listening to the best music in the world in downtown Charlottetown, having a great time.....enjoying everything East Coast Music has to offer. Oh, and being proud to be an East Coaster!

You can sit home if you want. Be proud you're from the back woods....all that good stuff.

Cranky Witch from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Now, if the ECMA wanted to roll into town in the middle of the summer when the tourism season is in full swing, I could see people not wanting them around, but in all seriousness, all that blows around town in February is snow drifts and the tourism operators can use the major injection of cash the ECMA brings with them. That being said, they are always a fantastic time regardless of what your musical preference is and they are a great way to discover new talent and support artists who enrich our lives.

In all seriousness, I have no idea why certain ignorant Islanders feel the need to spread ill-will. ECMAs are not an unknown entity. They've been around the block a few times now and it's a well-oiled machine and they bring many benefits to the host communities. Instead of sitting here spewing venom, why don't you try volunteering when they come back in 2011 - I bet your tune will change.

No Charley, no show from Charlottetown, PEI writes: What will it be without Don Messer, Charley Chamberlain and Marg Osborne?

Don and the Islanders were our first superstars.

Who can forget his silent stare at the cameras all those years ago? And Charley was Charley, that's for sure.

We were all dancing to the Islander tonight. How can you replace that with an ECMA? (whatever that is)
