$50 million lottery ticket bought in Manitoba Breaking News print this article
The Canadian Press

There is one winning ticket for the $50-million jackpot prize in Friday's Lotto Max draw _ and it was sold somewhere in Manitoba.

The ticket holder has one year to come forward to claim their prize, which is just $4.3-million shy of the biggest lottery prize ever awarded in Canada.

That $54.3-million jackpot was won in 2005 by 17 oil and gas workers in Camrose, Alberta in a Lotto 6-49 draw.

Each share was worth $3.2-million.

kitt from PEI writes: this lottery is fixed as all the big winners are not here in the maritimes and its always outwest such as ontraio or maitoba. It will never be fixed becuase when they get close to figuring it out they are just paid off so they will shut their mouths. If you want to win big in the lottery than move to either ontario or manitoba

Mr Cranky from Chtown, PE writes: Kitt, I don't suppose you would assume population density and the fact the lottery is a national draw, would have anything to do with this, right? A friendly FYI, your last use of THAN should be THEN. I'll assume it was a typo, not a grammatical error, you deserve the benefit of the doubt.
It's nice to see $50 million in one lump sum, actually. I just hope the winner isn't 100 years old. If they even mention once that the lottery won't change them or that they won't be quitting their remedial job, I'm going to throw up.

Evan from PE writes: Lots of big lotteries have been won in the Maritimes over the years; they win more in central and western Canada because more tickets are bought out there. It's just common sense.

AreYouKiddingMe? from PEI writes: Kitt, it could be fixed... but you also have to look at the size of the maritime provinces compared to the rest of canada... The Maritimes only has ~2 million people compared to the rest of Canada which has ~35 million. Ontario alone has 13 million people living there. So it's not hard to see that the we'd be less likely to win here compared to anywhere else.

Mike C from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Why do we bother.

Even here on the Island, with the VLT's and the Racino, everything is so fixed to favour the ALC and the PEI Government's trough. Did you know that PEI's Department of Treasury is responsible to over see gambling here, but at the same time they make money from gambling. Um, does anybody else see the conflict of interest here?

Well, gotta go. Have to sneak to a friend's basement to play Texas Hold Em. Don't tell ALC, as we know who really regulates gambling here on the Island..wink, wink!

dmc from pei writes: actually its called population base...when 10 x the tickets are purchased in a certain demographic then the likleyhood of a winner coming from there is higher then from a smaller population base...just makes sense.

ha,ha from pei writes: hey kitt, give your head a shake and listen for the rattle, most lottery winners are not in the Maritimes because the population is so mush higher in Ontario and Quebec. We have had some pretty good winners in the Maritimes in the past.

Huh? from PEI writes: Hey kitt

So is it fixed or will it be fixed? Since when is Ontario out west? In your ranting did you ever consider that the down east here we do not have a very high percentage of the total population of Canada? Oh btw if you would like to move please do not let the door hit you on the way out.

Kind Of Fishy Though from pe writes: It is kind of strange that this lottery had no winners until it built to the 50 million though. I feel there is some conflict here as well and that ALC should be made to broadcast their draws like the American lotteries do. Also, fact, ALC employees have won the most $$$ on lotteries and scratch tickets.

That Guy From PEI from PE writes: Money is not evil. Feel prosperous, and appreciate what one has.

What one has in their life, one has attracted to them on the level of thought.

Just a few words for people to comment on. Love it or hate it, our choice.

nitpicker from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Strange? Why is that? Hasn't there only been three draws?

And ALC stands for Atlantic Lottery Commission. This is a national draw.

Has anyone heard the term Paranoid?

David from PEI writes: If you think regulated gambling is fixed why don't you call the RCMP?

You've got to love rants on here but no proof and no calls to the authorities.

Try flipping a coin ten or a hundred times and try to guess what the results will be, you can't, it's called gambling and you lose because there is no way to predict the outcome not some paranoid conspiracy rant about it being fixed.

He may have something from PE writes: Kitt may have something to debate. You can go on and on about population density being the reason that lotto's are won in the larger cities, but think about this. Today the lottery is all electronic. THEY DO HAVE CONTROL OF WHERE THEY WANT THE WINNER TO BE! What ever happened to watching the balls drop on live television?? Too inconvenient, or uncomtrollable perhaps! Perhaps they fear the effect 50 million dollars could have on a small place in the wrong person's hands. I think Kitt has a good argument!
