IWMC seeks rate hike print this article
The Guardian

The Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) has made a rate adjustment application to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC).
IWMC CEO Gerry Moore says Waste Watch is an excellent program that greatly reduces the amount of waste in Island landfills.
“The rates Islanders pay to keep this environmentally friendly program up and running are more than reasonable, as is this small rate adjustment, which is the first such adjustment in four years.”
The application proposes an increase to the annual household fee, which would increase rates from $195 to $199.85 per year, and the commercial tippage fee, which would increase rates from $99 to $100 per metric tonne.
IWMC also proposes small increases for a number of other fees.
Moore said any potential rate adjustment applications must be reviewed and approved by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission, as with other public utilities, in order to ensure transparency and accountability for taxpayers.
He said IWMC staff are vigilant about controlling operating costs.
“Rate adjustments are considered only as a last resort in order to balance revenues and expenses. But there are certain input costs such as fuel, electricity, and other operational costs that are beyond our control as a corporation, just as they are for individuals and other organizations in both the public and private sector, and those costs continue to rise.”
If approved, the rate increases would be in effect Jan. 1, 2010.

BS from Charlottetown, PEI writes: I have to pay more to sort my garbage and have them 'forget' to pick it up because it is 4 inches off the sidewalk? It's getting to the point where you read this stuff and just go...oh well, they're doing it again because we all know it will be a rubber stamp.

Ray Hinchey from Borden-Carleton, PE writes: It is amazing that we are constantly sorting , storing, and then trying to make sure we get the proper material out on the right day, and oh yes, get it out at the right time as well.
The people are doing more work than the waste managment.

I have felt like building a four unit shelter at the curb to hold Garbage, Wood,Paper,Metal, then the driver could come on whatever day and time that he wants to and pick whatever he is taking that day. We all get a little tired trying to understand the system and draging bags in and out of the garage,

Michael Nesbitt from Miscouche, PE writes: Another case of public utility charging whatever they want because the public doesn't have any choice.
IWMC is not doing a great job. They try, but there is no incentive for individuals to do a better job of source sorting. There are many weeks when I don't even put out a cart because there is little in it, yet I pay the same as others who fill their carts and leave additionals every week.
Secondly, there is no responsibility for those who don't follow sorting standards. A simple glance, as one walks by too many carts, reveals how poorly sorting is done, if even attempted at all. It not only makes a mockery of the system , it reduces the value of compost production and waste-stream diversion. Yes, some refusal tags are given, but most of the time the garbage - for that is what it is when not souce separated properly - is simply dumped in to ruin the efforts of others who take the time and effort to sort properly.
I don't even want to get started on the number of people who simply chuck their wastes, furniture, white goods, oil tanks, etc., on Island roadsides!
Go ahead. Raise your rates, and put another nail in the coffin you are building for public acceptance.

Mark from PE writes: I noticed that the last increase that IWMC made & got was at the same time as the renovation of their offices & building. (Watts Ave.)
I wonder what they need to upgrade this time?

lots of garbage from over here from or there, PEI writes: If i was man making a living out of waste watch i would say it is a great program to..,. just look out through the country side and back roads there is more garbage out there then there was in the local landfill (dump) my feeling is that waste watch has been a farce since the first day of operation.,, And Mr Moore you dont need the requested $ 5.00 per house .,.,,.other then to get a few new suits.,,.,.the $ 5 extra dollarswould be greater spent hiring someone to clean up the country side dume sites.,.,.,take care got to go put my cart out you never know when they are comming for it.,,..,.,.

Yeah Right from pe writes: It's Waste Watch's fault that people are throwing garbage on the side of the road?

I say it is the fault of the people who think they can get away with it without anyone seeing it.

All this whining over $5 a year and you think they should take you seriously?

Grow up.

Walmart Employee from pe writes: Oh the myth of the poor islander. I see them everyday. Don't pawn off that cr@p story that most islanders can't make ends meet.

The store is full all day with islanders buying things that they don't need. Unless you are going to tell me Nintendo wii is a basic staple of existance, children will grow up malnourished if they aren't filled to the brim with Coke and Pepsi.

If they can't make ends meet, it's their own d@mned fault and not IWMC.

I can almost guarantee I make less than 98% of you, and I can afford the $5 a year. What's your excuse?

What difference? from Pei writes: I don't think that $5 per year constitutes as a rate hike . 10 cents a week. Big deal. If it wasn't announced, no one would have noticed.

Beth from PE writes: Don't forget that Islanders already had a waste watch increase when IWMC started requiring paper bags for yard waste.

For some people this added $10-20 a year onto their existing rate.

Danny from Pei writes: I really don't think that schedule is that hard to follow, waste one week, compost the next, on the same day. with a selected day once a month for recycle. Sounds like you expect these people to come inside your house to get your garbage. I have no problems with my garbage man, and for the people that work at waste watch in town, they are all great ppl.

NO more BS from pe writes: Walmart Employee, I know you work for the government so stop lying to the people.

I can tell by your post that you have no idea what it is like to be an average islander and want to take every last dime you can get out of us. You absolutelyy disgust me.
