Doctor Randy MacKinnon, a family physician at the Parkdale Medical Centre, has been named the P.E.I. winner for the 2009 Family Physican of the Year award.
The announcement was made Monday by the College of Family Physicians of Canada who are meeting this week in Calgary.
The Reg L. Perkin Awards recognize 10 outstanding family physicians - one from each province - for providing exceptional care to their patients, making meaningful contributions to the health and well-being of their communities, and for dedicating themselves as researchers or educators of future generations of family doctors.
Award recipients are nominated by their peers, patients, colleagues, and community leaders.
"The award recipients are skilled clinicians who are passionate about their profession and the doctor-patient relationship," said Dr. Sarah Kredentser, president of the CFPC.
The award presentations will be made during a ceremony at the CFPC's annual Family Medicine Forum in Calgary on Saturday, Oct. 31.
"I am humbled to have been chosen to receive this prestigious award. This is the highest honour that I could have hoped to achieve as a practicing family physician," said MacKinnon.
A P.E.I. native, MacKinnon oversees one of the largest practices in the region. His patients boast about seeing him quickly, often the same day. Yet MacKinnon has a reputation for being comprehensive, compassionate and conscientious.
After graduating from Dalhousie University, MacKinnon obtained his certification from the CFPC in 1995 and started practicing in Stratford. Shortly thereafter, he was awarded his Fellowship in 2008.
From 2001 to 2003, MacKinnon was President of the PEI Chapter and since 2004, a Board member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of P.E.I. He is also a preceptor for Dalhousie's Department of Family Medicine undergraduate education and postgraduate training programs.
Many of MacKinnon's students credit him with shaping their own careers. His ability to balance the pressures of family practice while dedicating time to his family is noteworthy.
MacKinnon’s typical day begins with 6 a.m. rounds at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and although his dedication to his patients extends well beyond his office practice, he is usually home to greet his children when they return from school. Known as the 'front-door physician,' MacKinnon encourages his patients to always call or visit before heading off to emergency.
The P.E.I. champ for the CFPC's Doctors Promoting Active Living initiative, MacKinnon is involved in all kinds of sports, more participating than watching. He is married to Paulette and they have two children, Emily and Andrew. An outdoor enthusiast, Randy's hobbies include camping, boating, skiing and biking.
This is the 37th year the college has honoured family physicians with this award. It is named in honour of Dr. Reg L. Perkin, CFPC Executive Director from 1985 to 1996. They are given as part of the annual Family Doctor Week in Canada celebration that this year runs from October 26-31.
