Tropical storm warning issued for Massachusetts as Category 2 Hurricane Bill speeds toward US
The Associated Press
Forecasters have issued a tropical storm warning for the Massachusetts coastline as Hurricane Bill speeds toward the U.S.
The warning, which includes the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, means tropical storm-force winds of 40 mph (64 kph) or more could hit the coastline in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a hurricane watch was discontinued for the island of Bermuda, though a tropical storm warning was still in effect. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami also say more watches and warnings could be posted for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in Canada.
Bill remained a Category 2 hurricane early Saturday, with winds near 105 mph (165 kph). It was swirling toward the north-northwest at about 22 mph (35 kph). It was about 575 miles (925 kilometres) south of Nantucket.
