Ghiz awarded top award in Communities in Bloom competition
The Guardian
Hannah Ghiz was awarded the Mayor’s 2009 Award to highlight the Make Charlottetown Bloom Awards presented Monday at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel.
Ghiz was recognized for the restoration and preservation of the home at 70 Sydney St.
This home was built in 1844 and was originally the home of Robert Hutchison who operated a dry goods and grocery store on the premises.
Hutchison was the first mayor of Charlottetown in 1855. The first meeting of city council was held in the upstairs parlour of this home and as well the first meeting of the newly elected council following amalgamation in 1995 was held in this home.
The annual Bloom awards mark the conclusion of the contest that is held in conjunction with the National Communities In Bloom competition.
Les Wong, of Home Hardware in Charlottetown, co-sponsor of the awards, participated in the presentations along with radio personality Gerard Murphy from Ocean 100.
Deputy Mayor Stu MacFadyen said there was a great response again this year to the contest, especially in the business category for Adopt a Corner that is promoted by Downtown Charlottetown Inc.
This year close to 50 corners/spots have been adopted by local Charlottetown business owners.

Gerry from pe writes: Congratulations to all, in particular UPEI. The wrought iron fencing in front of the UPEI campus and newer buildings certainly enrich the appearance of Charlottetown.

aLL ZAPPED OUT from Prince Edward Island writes: Yes I agree with the comment on the U.P.E.I property, way to go what a very nice change. However the apartments across the road seem to look like a slum. I would expect this in some inner city HOOD but come on people this is your home. What ever happened to taking pride in your surroundings?? Does anyone reading this ever remember anyone getting a littering fine? Me neither. Maybe time to address this. Just my .02
