Curlers applaud top performers 
Brett Gallant foursome big winner with three awards

SUMMERSIDE — The P.E.I. Curling Association recognized its top performers for their achievements during the 2008-09 season here at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club recently.
The Brett Gallant rink, which also includes third stone Adam Casey of Seven Mile Bay, Anson Carmody of Summerside and Jamie Danbrook of Charlottetown, was the big winner of the night.
The Charlottetown Curling Club rink was named team of the year.
In addition, Gallant was named junior male athlete of the year and the team’s coach, Peter Gallant, took home coach-of-the-year honours.
Sarah Fullerton, who skipped her rink to repeat wins at both the Sylvan Learning provincial 17-and-under and the Atlantic 17-and-under championships, was announced as the junior female athlete of the year.
The adult male award went to Mel Bernard, skip of the provincial senior mixed and Credit Unions of P.E.I. senior men’s championship teams.
The Bernard foursome finished in third place at the Canadian senior championships at their home club, Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.
Jeanne Duffenais of Summerside skipped her team to a sixth-straight masters title, played third stone on the provincial senior mixed-winning team and took home the adult female award.
Summerside’s Cliff Poirier was presented the award for official of the year.
Curl Atlantic representative, official and incoming P.E.I. Curling Association president Shirley Lank received the volunteer-of-the-year certificate.
Following the presentation of the ADL/Sport P.E.I. sport achievement awards, the P.E.I. Curling Association paid tribute to all the winning teams from the season and to the sponsors of the provincial curling championships.
