A major project to recycle old stockpiles of used tires on Prince Edward Island has been completed.
Close to 10,000 bales of used tires were shipped off island for recycling as part of a two-year project by the Island Waste Management Corporation.
Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron MacKinley says the used tires will see new life as recycled products like “crumb” which is used for footing in sports fields and playgrounds.
West Royalty-Springvale MLA Bush Dumville welcomed news of the project’s completion, noting that the used tire stockpiles had been an ongoing environmental concern in his community.

Bravo from Charlottetown, PEI writes: I had always heard that old tire were good for something (repaving roads etc.).
This is the first time I've heard someone acting on it. Imagine, tires as a semi-sustainable item.
Usually it's a fire in tire dump somewhere and, oh yeah, that'll be another 10 bucks on your tire for 'disposal fees'.
