Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart, Carolyn Bertram, P.E.I. minister of Communities and Cultural Affairs, and Gail Shea, right, P.E.I.’s representative in the federal cabinet, on Wednesday announced that all three levels of government will be contributing $4.5 million into phase two of the Summerside wind farm. SUMMERSIDE — The federal and provincial governments plan to invest up to $9 million in phase two of Summerside’s wind turbines project.
Phase two of the wind energy project will see the purchase and installation of two wind turbines at the north St. Eleanor’s site. Combined with phase one, the wind farm has the potential to meet more than 25 per cent of the city’s energy needs.
The total estimated cost of phase two of the project is $13.5 million.
The City of Summerside is contributing one-third of the costs.
The total project cost of both phase one and phase two is $30 million.
Egmont MP Gail Shea, P.E.I.’s representative in the federal cabinet, says the government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years.
“The wind farm project is an example of what we are doing to keep Canadians working, our economy growing and our communities green,” Shea said.
“As minister responsible for infrastructure and municipal affairs, I recognize that modern infrastructure plays a critical role in the development of healthy, sustainable and vibrant communities,” said P.E.I. Communities Minister Carolyn Bertram.
Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart thanked the federal and provincial governments “for their contribution and commitment to our city and this project that will improve the environment while supplying green energy to our customers.”

pat from pei writes: Well it's great to see the wind farm in summerside . But the bulk of the money that the federal goverenment gives will go to the wind mill companies and that will leave the country.

WindEnergyBenefits ForAllIslanders!!!! from cradle town, PEI writes: Way to go! Excellent! Congrats to Stewart, Bertram, and Shea. This is perfectly because Summerside got its act together- consultations, discussions, good business planning and real tangible benefits for Summerside people in the plan itself.

Now, Carolyn, talk to Robbie and Richie and set up a similar plan for all Islanders. Drop the lawyer-driven corporate give away plan, learn from Summerside, and do planning and policy for wind energy for the benefit of the people of PEI. Carolyn, remind them of Islanders First for a Change! Remember that?

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
