On senior staff and lobster woes
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Guardian
Editor:
Some musings on recent local news events:
Premier Ghiz defends recent promotions of senior staffers ($80,000-plus per year). This, amid the PNP fiasco, the collapse of the lobster fishery and the looming small school closure issue. He said he "appointed them into the senior compensation plan because of their expertise - not because of their political connections." This is the best we have?
Rick MacLean's column (in Saturday's Guardian) defended MLA Mike Currie for, allegedly, assaulting a private citizen who asked Currie if his wife received any PNP 'credits' (they're $200,000 each; why call them 'units'?). MacLean likened it to a threatening letter convicted murderer Allan Legere sent to MacLean's wife. Come on, Rick. There's a big difference here. Citizens have a right to ask these questions.
CBC Compass' political commentators (now experts on the economy as well, apparently) recently discussed the current lobster crisis. Ian Dowbiggin said, when asked what the answer was, 'we need more lobster processors'. Huh? CBC said processors were sitting on $30 million worth of frozen lobster. Don't quit your day job, Ian.
