Joey Haddad is making a habit out of big playoff openers for Cape Breton.

After tying the game late in the third period, Haddad scored the overtime winner to lead the Screaming Eagles over the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-4 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night.

Last year, Haddad was the central figure in Cape Breton’s 8-3 win over the Lewiston Maineiacs, scoring twice and finishing with five points on the night.

On Friday, the hometown hero came through once again. Haddad scored the tying goal with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation. He then scored the winner on a power play 10 minutes into overtime as the Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 series lead over Saint John despite trailing the Sea Dogs for most of the game.

Cape Breton’s only lead of the game came four minutes and 26 seconds into the first period, when Nick MacNeil opened the scoring with a power-play goal. The lead was short-lived, however, as Saint John replied less than a minute later and went on to score two more before the end of the period.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Drummondville 12, Lewiston 3; Quebec 8, Baie-Comeau 1; Moncton 7, P.E.I. 1; Rimouski 8, Chicoutimi 2; Gatineau 5, Acadie-Bathurst 4 (OT); Shawinigan 5, Victoriaville 2; and Montreal 5, Rouyn-Noranda 3.

At Sydney, N.S., Haddad, who finished the season on a seven-game point streak, also assisted on Michael Ward’s second-period marker, while Nick MacNeil had a goal and an assist and Jean-Christophe Gauthier added a goal for the Screaming Eagles.

Michael Kirkpatrick notched two goals and an assist for the Sea Dogs. Steven Anthony had a goal and an assist, Danick Gauthier scored and Simon Despres added three assists.

Olivier Roy made 25 saves to earn the win. Saint John netminder Robert Mayer stopped 36 shots.

Voltigeurs 12, Maineiacs 3

At Drummondville, Que., Mike Hoffman scored four times as the Voltigeurs crushed Lewiston to take a 1-0 series lead.

Hoffman also had an assist to join Dany Masse (three goals, two assists), Yannick Riendeau (2-3) and Christopher DiDomenico (0-5) with five points for Drummondville. Philippe Lefebvre had a goal and an assist, while Samson Mahbod and Charles Landry also scored.

Danick Paquette had a goal and two assists, Maxime Gratchev had a goal and an assist and Alexander Beaton added a goal for the Maineiacs.

Remparts 8, Drakkar 1

At Quebec, Mikael Tam scored twice and added an assist as the Remparts routed Baie-Comeau in the opening game of their first-round series.

Benjamin Breault had a goal and two assists, Jean-Simon Allard had a goal and an assist, while Mikhail Stefanovich, Dmitri Kugryshev, David Gilbert and Samuel Carrier also scored for Quebec.

Felix Petit had the lone marker for the Drakkar.

Wildcats 7, Rocket 1

At Moncton, Randy Cameron had two goals and two assists as the Wildcats cruised to a 1-0 lead in their first-round series against P.E.I.

Matt Eagles had a goal and an assist, Adam Bezak, Zach Sill, Scott Brannon and Devon MacAusland added goals and Mark Barberio had four assists for Moncton.

Benjamin Cassavant scored for the Rocket.

Oceanic 8, Sagueneens 2

At Rimouski, Keven Veilleux and Philippe Cornet each had a goal and three assists as the Oceanic dominated Chicoutimi in their series opener.

Patrice Cormier and Olivier Fortier had a goal and an assist each, while Patrick Delisle-Houde, Logan MacMillan, Emmanuel Boudreau and Luca Cunti also scored for Rimouski.

Mathieu Tousignant and Drew Paris both scored and added an assist for the Sagueneens.

Olympiques 5, Titan 4 (OT)

At Gatineau, Que., Tye McGinn scored his second goal of the game 15 minutes into overtime to give the Olympiques 1-0 series lead over Acadie-Bathurst.

McGinn added an assist and Jean-Philip Chabot also had three points, with a goal and two assists for Gatineau. Maxime Mallette and Joshua Domingues added goals.

Taylor Lambke had a goal and three assists, Spencer Jezegou scored and added two assists, Artem Demkov had a goal and an assist and Danick Malouin also scored for the Titan.

At Shawinigan, Que., Nicolas Petersen scored twice as the Cataractes defeated Victoriaville in their series opener.

Simon Lacroix, Maxime Legault and Charles-Olivier Roussel also scored for Shawinigan.

Michael-Philip Devos had a goal and an assist and Andrej Nestrasil added a goal for the Tigres.

At Montreal, Nick Layton had a goal and two assists to lead the Junior past Rouyn-Noranda in the first game of their first-round series.

Dmitri Kostromitin and Matt Fillier had a goal and an assist each, while David Foucher and Louis-Marc Aubry also scored for Montreal.

Benoit Gervais, Nicolas Deslauriers and Dominik Bohac replied for the Huskies.
