Duffy walks away from reporter’s question
WAYNE THIBODEAU The Guardian
A newly-minted P.E.I. senator appears to be growing tired of talking about a mounting rift between himself and Island Premier Robert Ghiz.
During an announcement in Charlottetown Friday, Duffy refused to take questions from reporters about the rift and walked away from a media scrum when the issue was raised.
Duffy was talking about equalization when a reporter asked him about the rift with the P.E.I. premier.
“Ahh, forget that,” said Duffy, as he raised his hand in disgust and walked away from reporters.
Duffy has also refused to do interviews with CBC-TV and canceled an appearance on EastLink Television since the controversy erupted.
In Halifax last weekend, Duffy said Ghiz is a “Rambo wannabe” who couldn't match his late father's intellect, making reference to former P.E.I. Premier Joe Ghiz.
“Joe Ghiz knew what he was doing. Joe Ghiz was a very smart guy and I'm afraid Robert, well anyway, I'll just leave it at that,” Duffy said last weekend.
Ghiz described the comments as “unfortunate” during an interview with The Guardian earlier this week.
“I have no idea where it's coming from,” said Ghiz. “Perhaps Mr. Duffy might just need to take a little time to grow into this new role.”
The comments in Halifax came on the heels of sensational comments at a Conservative meeting in Winsloe last week, and again in the Senate, where he suggested Ghiz may get the “shaft” by getting in bed with the premier of Newfoundland, and that the sight of two politicians in bed was “... a grotesque scene.”
Despite a public rebuke by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who suggested Duffy’s comments were “perhaps inappropriate,” Duffy remains unapologetic. He claims he used the language to grab people's attention.

James Mcgoo from Lakesdie, PEI writes: Mr. Duffy was appointed to represent the people of PEI. He was not elected. The appointment was a great honor. Any person presented with it would find it difficult to refuse. Perhaps Mr. Duffy did not spend enough time understanding the responsibilities that comes with this honor. Did he ask himself if he really wanted to adjust his lifestyle to the demands of the position. Only Mr Duffy knows the answers to these questions. It is not too late for him to reflect on these understandings and questions.
The citizens and taxpayers of PEI are experiencing incredible strains upon their households and economy. They deserve representation that is focused and serious. They need to ask themselves the same questions Mr. Duffy should have answered before accepting his appointment. The answers the citizens arrive at are as important or more so than Mr. Duffy's. If Mr. Duffy cannot change his behavior to begin representing the people in a manner that reflects the challenges they are facing, then maybe they should exercise their constitutional rights and un-appoint him. A recall may be wearisome, but representation is more important than what amounts to none at all.

Mervin Hollingsworth from Saskatoon, Sask. writes: This is typical of the media in Canada. They are like a pack of mad dogs with a bone. All the parties involved have made their comments and positions perfectly clear but that's not good enough. Instead of moving on and asking substantive questions about today's complex issues they prefer to talk about the mundane. I could care less about Williams, Ghiz and Duffy. My life will go on but it gets a little ridiculous. No wonder Canadians have little use for the media.

Frank White from Charlottetown, PE writes: typical of canadian media?
grow up and take some travels around the world... think about this same situation in any US, Asian, or European media... it'd definately be a lot worse for Duffy.
some of you whine like Harper... I suppose the media should only be allowed to publish 'pre-approved' opinions, questions and thoughts right?
Duffy shows no respect towards Islanders.. he makes a stir, and when us, the Islanders, complain about it not being in our best interest... he degrades us and thinks of us as too stupid and too backwoods to really grasp whats going on, and that we should let him go on his self-righteous tyrade because its over our heads anyway, and we should just trust the city-folk with his big words and his city-folk learnin' to act on our behalf (which apparently includes disrespecting ourselves, disrespecting our elected Premier, among other anomalys that do not reflect the average islander's opinion).
Mike Duffy, a face and voice meant for radio.
(oh, and the Senate is very important... there needs to be UNBIASED UNPARTISAN UNPOLITICAL advice based on a moral level... if we only stayed within Political and Legal opinion, and never looked from 'outside the box' then we'd probably be a lot more like the States and their f-ed up Senate/Government... and nobody wants that, not even people in the US)

C. Little from PE writes: What a shame. Here we have a senator in the news and he is there for all the wrong reasons. There have been senators who have worked hard in committees and so forth and they get little to no recognition. Here is Duffy, who inexplicably (given that he has been in public life for many
Years) makes the news on a regular basis for saying vulgar things and behaving like our worst nightmare vision of what unelected, absentee appointees are. He loves the attention.
Wait until he finds out that senators’ work takes place in committee rooms and not in front of the press. Get on the work and stop being an embarrassment.

Tell it Like it is from Stratford, PEI writes: To all of you who keep saying that this is the same old story, that's only because Duffy keeps fanning the flames. Don't blame the Guardian.
I saw him snub his nose at the reporters with a wave of his hand, a snorting of his nose.
Instead of behaving like an insensitive blob who sticks both feet in his mouth at once, how about him showing some grace and apologizing?
I'd like to see less and less of him and hear less and less of him. He may be a PEI Senator technically, but he wouldn't have a hope in hell of ever being elected by the people of PEI.
On a final note, to all of you who keep harping on about Premier Ghiz not having got a handle on his job, come on. True or otherwise, this has nothing to do with Duffy's bad manners and vulgar spouting off.

Feel free to fill me in on what 'TRUTH' Duffy has graced us with... the only remotely relevant thing he has said/done was to warn Ghiz about Williams, but even in that case he went over the top to the point where any sort've ADVICE offered was overshadowed with criticism and childish insults... and he completely failed to recognize that Ghiz is obligated to look after Islander's best interest, and if that means siding with Williams on ONE of these subjects to do so, then so be it... feel like warning him to be wary of Williams on OTHER subjects? thats fine... warm him, but do so approriately, and recognize the difference between this issue, and him hopping into bed with him on EVERY issue (something that never happened, except in Duffy's unusual political bedroom fantasies which unfortunately hit the microphone).
I am pleased however that Ghiz, the younger man, is taking the wise route and not sinking to his level of insults etc, making the older man look even more foolish...
...
oh well, I guess the old anology holds strong... EMPTY BARRELS ALWAYS MAKE THE LOUDEST NOISES

This episode illustrates the great depth of the journalistic corps: don't bother about explaining important matters to your readers, just deal with the silly gossipy talk, what's hot and what's not, cheers and jeers. Little wonder many news organizations are in financial straits.

Ron Gaudet from Ottawa, Ont writes: Duffy is getting a reality check. For years he ruined people's lives but misleading and torquing comments and ideas to put the most negative and sensational spin to garner ratings and create problems - thus is the reality of Canadian media. fred laflamme from kingston, ontario writes: I always admired and respected Mike Duffy the journalist; he espoused the attributes of a good reporter and commentator - he was always fair, thoughtful, balanced, complete and truthful in the expression of his views and opinions.
As a senator it is too early to determine if history will record him as one of the finest in his field as he is generally regarded among the ranks of his former profession. However, I think he will have to grow into this new senatorial role the same way he did as a new, young journalist - slowly. He may enjoy this new career for 15 or more years, so there shouldn't be any hurry to try and prove himself right out of the gate. Mike Duffy the senator should employ the same characteristics he used as a learning, maturing journalist. He is afterall still in a position of some power and should think twice and clearly (the way he was trained as a journalist) before he attempts to comfort the afflicted or afflict the comfortable. The ramifications can be hurtful, divisive, and long lasting to himself and others.
Try it again Mike and remember, we were all given two ears and only one mouth for a reason.

Wes Sheridan used very disrespectful language to describe the Prime Minister at a recent meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, did the guardian report it ... NO. our little island is looking very foolish and the only ones we have to blame is ourselves

Your survival depends upon the largess of the have provinces of Canada where Williams is seen as nothing but a loud mouth buffoon. All Duffy is suggesting is be careful to whom you hitch your star. Scott from Prince Edward Island writes: I think we need more people like Mike Duffy.
It is obvious that people are not paying attention or just do not care about politics. Look at what the Government gets away with. Anything they want goes. There is no opposition, it just happens. The people of Canada are sheeple. Like I've said before, all talk no action. We complain and complain but never do anything about it, it is pathetic.
So, along comes Duffy and hopefully people like Duffy to stir things up a bit. We as a society have become sedentary. It is sad and things do not look good for the future.

The Puffster is getting out of the kitchen because he has a terribly thin skin like most of his former confreres in the media.
But seriously, if you can't take the heat of the Senate, considered by most a cold, shallow place, then resign.
