North River Causeway re-opens to traffic ahead of schedule Breaking News print this article
The Guardian

After four days of detour delays, the North River causeway bridge reopened Monday almost a half an hour ahead of schedule.
The causeway was slated to reopen at 12 p.m. but crews had the bridge open 25 minutes beforehand.
“We opened right on time,” said Andrew Sprague, spokesperson for the Department of Transportation. “Traffic is traveling across the bridge again.”
Bridging the gap river gap between Cornwall and Charlottetown the causeway had been closed for the past four days due to construction. An alternative, but lengthy, detour was set up along Route 2.
Because of this, drivers traveling to Cornwall from Charlottetown and vice-versa had been advised to leave roughly 15 minutes early to reach their destination on time.
Although the bridge is now open a lane reduction of one lane each way will continue to be in place until mid-September when construction is expected to be finished.

what a joke from pe writes: HAHAHA... this is 'big news' they are just trying to make themselves look good after all the traffic delays. 25 mins ahead, what a joke.

smartest guy in the room from PE writes: 25 minutes beforehand - are we to be impressed by this feat? It's any absolute farce it has taken this long to complete such a small span. A crew in other province or state would have had this task completed weeks ago

B. cant believe it... from PEI writes: I believe that there is no room for bragging rights here. As the comments before me I have to agree that it is absurd to brag about half an hour here. Why did it take so long to complete the project to start with. Perhaps they should have been doing a little more work and a little less coffee breaks. I usually dont like to complain but in this case........ I dont even know where to start.

fiasco from pei writes: what a joke, it's not going to be finished until Mid-September now... terrible... and my post on the last story related to this has still not been posted, so much for free speech.

Are you Kidding? from Cornwall, PE writes: Oh please.... leave 15 mins early to arrive on time ????? It took 90 mins to get to work on Friday morning when it usually takes 10 mins.

You do the math.

Phillip Ontakos from PEI writes: Hey (fiasco from PEI)

this the Guardian. they only print half truths.

so when making a comment makeup a bunch of lies and it will get printed. or blame everything on the liberals, or find some uneducated sap to write your comments for you. because those comments always seem to make it on here and never get removed.

RoadWarrier from P.E.I. writes: It should never have taken that long to begin with. P.E.I. is still in the dark ages when it comes to road construction methods and equipment too. Last week I saw a pavement grinder from a major construction firm in Summerside that should not even be on the road. It was dead slow, spewing so much black smoke that it was certainly causing a health hazard to those around it and especially the driver. Must be something a construction firm in another province wanted to throw away. I'm sure they got it for next to nothing.

As for the North River job, I've driven throughout every province and almost every state in North America. Construction and road delays are a reality and there is no getting around it. However there are ways to mitigate inconveniences caused to the travelling public. The primary one I can point out is having the work done by shift work crews working 24 hours per day. In many other areas, major construction projects are carried out (with modern equipment)at all hours. It gets the job done faster and the workers are able to get much more work done at night. Even if Island construction companies decided to do all their road work at night instead of the day time, projects could be finished much faster. But, on P.E.I., I suspect this would never happen because we (islanders) tend to stick to the old ways and it takes one heck of a lot of pressure to change things! Probably be impossible to get the workers to change their ways too. If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got eh.

George Costanza from PEI writes: This whole project has been a farce from the beginning. It should be been done before Canada Day. What a joke. Only on P.E.I. Thank God they got it done a whole 25 minutes early. My post on the earlier story wasn't put up either fiasco so don't feel too bad. Too much truth I guess.

the big fella from pei writes: I hope everyone doesn't forget the minister, Ronnie, it was him that the bridge opened early. always concerned about the needs of the people in his district and the all ISLANDERS.
Congratulations to Ronnie for a great job done.

cityresident from P.E. writes: I would say the one reason why the job diddn't go 24 hrs a day would be because they couldn't /wouldn't get a government inspector to be there at night to oversee the job. Not that it matters as this job shouldn't have had to be redone after a short few tears ago !!!

sigh.... from PEI writes: Done early?? They are still working on the stupid thing. There was no need to close the bridge as they could have paved one side each day and alternate traffic.

Big wow on the 25 minute mark.. that was the most pathetic thing I heard in a long while..

hmmmm from PE writes: Whine! Whine! Whine! Whine! Whine!

If people don't meet their deadlines, they are incompetant and lazy. If they make their deadline, or finish early they are still incompetant and lazy and are too stupid to properly plan.

As for the Island being in the dark ages, this paper is full of shouting about how stupid people are any time there is a suggestion to do anything different because that shows that they don't know what they are doing and brings up every mistake made by whatever party the writer isn't a supporter of.

Defeatist all right. Everyone is stupid but me, makes all sound like a bunch of Homer Simpsons.

Barry from Ont writes: I hear a lot of complaining going on. You have to give the contractors time to do it right. We do not want the same job done as it was 12 years ago GOD BLESS..

Scooter from Cornwall, PEI writes: Ill be the second one on here to actually thank the contractors for getting the job done. People complained when they had to take a detour now they are complaining not only about the bridge being open a little early but about how long its taking to finish. Does anything make the commenter's on here happy? I cant wait to read the comments when they write the story about the bridge being completely finished as they will probably read like...complain, growl, complain, random political comment, more complaining etc, etc ,etc.

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
