Fire Started in Bedroom Area of Tattoo Store - Inspector
JIM DAY The Guardian
The fire that gutted four businesses and three apartments in Charlottetown Friday started in the sleeping area of a tattoo parlour, the city's fire inspector said Monday.
"We were able to identify the room of origin through some of the burn patterns,' said Randy MacDonald.
"It is reported that there was a person in the tattoo shop at the time of the fire and we will follow that up with the course of interviews.'
MacDonald said an excavator was brought in Monday to make the area safe for investigators. Walls were torn down as spectators gathered on the streets and sidewalks outside the razed building located at the corner of Kent and Prince Streets.
MacDonald said a small bedroom in the tattoo parlour, called Tombstone Tattoos, was identified as the area where the fire started. The exact location nor the ignition source could be determined by the physical examination of the area.
So the investigation moves from examining the scene to interviewing people, said the fire inspector.
Thanh Nguyen, who escaped the blaze Friday along with his sister and his nephew, was among the business owners and apartment dwellers who came throughout the day to assess the aftermath.
His store, which is located next to the destroyed building, suffered some smoke and water damage. The business, called Princess Nails, should be open by Monday. Nguyen will also reopen his Summerside location on Wednesday or Thursday.
City Cab was quick to turn a temporary move into a permanent location. The cab company, which started in the Prince Street location across from The Guardian about 35 years ago, moved their dispatch operation to a location on Walker Drive immediately following the fire.
By mid-morning Friday, City Cab was moving into a Kent Street location right across from the burned building. That spot will be the cab company's new home, said manager Joseph Corrigan Jr.
Rose's Barber Shop and Tribes Art & Decor were also destroyed in the fire. The owners of these two businesses could not be reached for comment Monday.
