Psssssssst.
Islanders will be enjoying that sound today as tabs pop open on a number of carbonated beverages purchased on P.E.I. for the first time in decades.
Canned pop will be sold here today for the first time since March 1, 1984. And beer can be bought in cans after 35 years of being sold on the Island in bottles only.
That well-worn Island tradition of stocking up with canned beer and canned pop on the drive home from the mainland will finally grind to a halt. Sales of canned pop at Allen’s Petro-Can & Grocery in Timber River, N.B., long the last stop for many homebound Island motorists before hitting Confederation Bridge, are bound to plummet.
Consumer demand finally forced the government’s hand. The ban on the sale of carbonated beverages in non-refillable containers is officially lifted as of today.
A survey conducted for Coca-Cola in 2002 said 70 per cent of Islanders would support change to allow the sale of carbonated beverages in aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
While consumers benefit with the convenience of being able to make purchases at local stores rather than during a trip across the Northumberland Strait, the provincial government will be the big fiscal benefactor of the Beverage Container Act introduced in the legislature last week.
A study way back in 1998, conducted by UPEI, suggested P.E.I. loses more than $4 million annually because of the ban on canned pop alone.
Pepsi and Coca-Cola have been moving fast and furious to stock Island shelves with their products as consumers are expected to flood stores across the province looking for their favourite carbonated beverages now packaged here in cans and plastic.
“We’ve been working round the clock to support retailers across P.E.I.,’’ said Steve Chiasson of Pepsi Bottling Group.
“We expect to have good product distribution across the Island by (today) when stores open.’’
Jeff Brown, general manager for the Maritimes with Coca-Cola Bottling Company, says close to 70 sales people, drivers and merchandisers are in P.E.I. this week looking after the logistics of the major shift.
“It’s a big deal. It’s a lot of work with the customers,’’ said Brown. “We think it will take three or four weeks to get everything done to adjust our customers coolers and make everything available.’’
Brown estimates the canned Coca Cola products will take one to two weeks to get into all of the Island stores seeking to sell them.
“It’s our goal to get to as many places as we can,’’ he said. “We are working feverishly through the night.’’
Red Bull was busy marketing their product on the Island Friday by handing out free samples of the energy drink in cans.
“Starting Saturday, Islanders wanting to purchase Red Bull should be able to find it in almost all grocery and convenience stores, as well as their favourite restaurants and bars,’’ said a spokesperson with the company.

Jason from PEI writes: Its nice to see canned pop here (although we all took it back from moncton at one time) but I really hate seeing the glass bottles leave completely. Pop tastes so much better in the glass bottles and it made PEI unique.
Whatever happened to their idea of keeping 50/50 of each? It stunned me yesterday afternoon when I had to drive around to find a place still having pop as I needed a pepsi!

Greg from PEI writes: Jason, Personally I don't think you could do 50/50. Logistically it would be a nightmare. Pepsi and Coke would have to run 2 seperate bottling operations to meet PEI's needs, and you would have to have 2 exchange programs in places. It was purely a business decision.
I don't think we could do both. Im sure Coke and Pepsi would LOVE to manufacture half of what they previously made for PEI in glass just to satisfy a bunch of backwards country hicks' desires. We can't have both.
As much as I hate to see bottles go too, I understand it is pretty much a business decision and it is what it is.

It must suck to be so concerned with how we are all looked upon by the ever impressive tourists from the mainland and co-workers in the ultra cool metropolis of Kingston, ON. If there is anything PEI should strive to be BTW is Kingston, ON. It must suck to have to seek approval from others to make yourself feel good.

herb from pe writes: The end to can ban has nothing to do with tradition IMO. It has to do with taking a step backwards environmentally. I don't care what the initial intent was. Reusing a bottle is much better for the planet than recycling a piece of aluminum. No matter how inconvenient it is for our superiors from the mainland.

Good Lord from Kingston, ON writes: Just itching to get a reaction out of me eh Herb? Well, Kingston is not the greatest of cities, and, I prefer Charlottetown in the summer anyday to anywhere else in Canada but, Kingston has something which Charlottetown lacks, JOBS that pay good money. You can keep your little Island traditions all you want, it won't make a lick of difference in ten or fifteen years when there are 3 or 4 retired seniors to every worker who pays taxes and there are no kids to replace them because all the young people have left for Ontario or Alberta. When I told a friend of mine from PEI that I was thinking of moving here he said the landscape was beautiful but the place was retarded. I now understand. The so call lifting of the can ban is just such a point. This place is retarded. Windmill electricity for the states carried along nature trails and not a boo from Minister Webster. But celebrating the fact that he can now get canned beer. Boy -O -Boy break out the suds. Retarded!

Get some Education!! from PEI writes: I cannot believe the people of PEI fought to get can pop and beer to be sold on PEI. Other provinces are trying to ban it!
Little things amuse little minds. I never see Island people fight for a higher minimum wage or better child care services. What about the care for seniors? What about Health Care??? What about all of the pot holes in the roads? etc.
But you fight for CAN POP. Don't you think that is dumb??
I bet you are out there right now, buying it by the dozens. Don't worry the aluminum will poison you soon enough! By the way, why not light up a smoke and have it with your can of pop??? You can only die faster, but then everyone is going to die!
What I cannot believe, is there are having celebrations for can pop and beer!
They don't have celebrations for all those kind people out there who volunteer their time, or those who give to soup kitchens etc.
Don't complain about the price of gas, if you can afford to stock your fridge with can pop! Maybe someday someone will invent a car that runs on can pop????
And to those Islanders that moved to Ontario or other parts of Canada. These people you are trying to please are not any better than Islanders!
To be ashamed to be an Islander is stupid! If you are a confident person, you should be proud of yourself and where you were born.
I for one, am PROUD to be an Islander! It is a beautiful Island, and I am proud to live here!!!!!

k macphee from yellowknife, NT writes: One of the enjoyments I had of visiting the Island was to get pop in a glass bottle.
In my opinion, it tasted better and you didn't get a tinny taste that I find with cans, and the oily taste that comes off the plastic bottles.
I found it was unique that the Island had its own company to bottle pop and employed its own people.
Having can/plastic bottles is not, in my opinion moving ahead. Just more garbage to be collected.
Glass bottles is the in thing, able to clean and reuse.

Yes people lost jobs, they did when Coke closed the plant on Kensington Rd too.My husband's work closed about 5 years ago, guess what? He changed careers! Also, where I live kids think it is a game to smash bottles on the road. If you walk your dog you have to be careful. Also imagine if a few weeks ago the kids who damaged windows had only cans to throw. It would not have smashed the glass in their homes but the tinging of ricocheting tin may have woken up the owners in time to see who these people were.
