Summerside plans to tap into wind energy print this article
MIKE CARSON
The Guardian

SUMMERSIDE — City officials are moving ever closer to a Summerside wind farm that will involve four wind turbines in the North St. Eleanors area.
The city’s chief administrative officer Terry Murphy said a public meeting has been set for April 21 at the St. Eleanors Community Centre to review the environmental impact assessment study for the site. That meeting will take place between 5 and 8 p.m.
The location for the wind farm will be in the area of the former St. Eleanors landfill site.
It’s been over a year since the environmental impact assessment began but the city was in negotiations with Slemon Park.
“We had to come to an agreement with the Slemon Park Corporation in terms of being able to build it so it doesn’t impact on them,” Murphy said. “There will have to be an instrument landing system installed at Slemon Park and that instrument landing system will bring great benefits to Slemon Park.”
The new landing system will be part of the overall cost of the $14-million project, which is cost-shared with the federal and provincial governments. The city is putting its fuel tax revenues towards the project, reducing its share of the overall cost reducing it to just under $2 million.
The site will contain four wind turbines of three megawatts each and they would be located in the general area of the former landfill site.
Murphy said one turbine will be on the actual former landfill site while the others will be on nearby private land leased by the city.
The power generated by the wind turbines will be fed directly into the Summerside electric utility.
“It’s another piece of the puzzle,” Murphy said. “Energy isn’t cheap anymore and it’s not going to get cheaper.”
Once the requirements of the environmental impact assessment are completed, the city will be ordering its turbines. Murphy said it will take between a year to 18 months before the equipment reaches Summerside.

Wanting cheaper electricity from PE writes: I wonder if the other residents of the City Of Summerside who do not benefit from the Summerside Electrical Utility will actually be intergrated into the Summerside Power grid? Would be nice since our electric bill is almost double as most of the rest of the residents in the city.

where is this cheaper ele from PE writes: I received my electric bill today and observed that the rate has gone up again to 12.58 cents per KWH, also the Basic Service Charge has gone up. This rate change has been going up every month for the last six months. I called the CITY Hall to enquire if monthly increases were going to stop. I was informed that Maritime Electric controls the prices charged so for all you people that seem to think that Summerside is getting cheaper Electricity, check it out before you speak. We don't even get the services you do because Maritime Electric will do nothing in Summerside as they say Summersdie is responsible. No one cares as long at the money keeps rolling in to CITY Hall

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
