The P.E.I. WI Education Scholarship for 2017 was awarded to Josee Smallman of O’Leary. She is enrolled at University of Prince Edward Island. The Louise MacMillan Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Grace Coles from North Milton. She is enrolled at the University of New Brunswick. The board extends best wishes to both winners and all applicants in their continued studies.
The P.E.I. Women’s Institute reminds all students there are several scholarships offered throughout the year. The next opportunity is for the Helen Herring Scholarship for students entering their third year of university. The deadline is Sept. 30, and details are available online at www.peiwi.ca.
The provincial board and WI members across P.E.I. congratulate Marie Kenny on her most recent announcement of receiving the national Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from Gov. Gen. David Johnston in June.
Old Home Week is slated for Aug. 10-19, and Islanders are invited to submit entries to the WI’s Handcraft, Horticulture and Art Show. Various classes in art, crafts, food, flowers, photography and vegetables can be entered and items will be on display during the provincial exhibition. The deadline to register is July 28. P.E.I. Women's Institute and 4-H P.E.I. will be teaming up at Old Home Week this year. With hands-on workshops and demonstrations for all ages, members of the public are invited to join WI and 4-H volunteers in learning about needlework, sewing, card-making, glass-etching, knitting, jewellery making, felt work and much more. Demonstrations will be offered twice daily in the 4-H booth area on the main level at the 4-H Exploration Centre.
Volunteers are still needed for this year’s Handcraft, Horticulture and Art Show of Old Home Week. Anyone interested, including students, are invited to participate during scheduled times. Students needing volunteer hours are encouraged to sign up. Contact Carol Jenkins at 902-367-4738.

A variety of themes will be part of this year's fall workshops, including a session with John Robertson known for his “The Butler is In” segment regularly aired on CBC radio’s Island Morning; Annie Lee MacDonald for P.E.I.’s Canadian Hard of Hearing Association with “Pardon Me? What did you say?” and a food-related demonstration. The evening workshops are scheduled for Oct. 11 in Summerside, Oct. 17 in Charlottetown and Oct. 19 in Montague. Pre-registration will be required.
