Peng Peng, operation and advertisement manager for EasyPEI, one of the companies helping out, says money raised is used to help some bachelor of education students who travel to places such as Africa, Japan and Europe for internships.

EasyPEI operates out of the Atlantic Technology Centre in Charlottetown.

“Part of it comes from the school; some of it comes from local companies that sponsor,’’ Peng said.

The idea came from a discussion Peng had with her boss.

EasyPEI develops free mobile software called EzCity. Whether it’s the software her company creates or the UPEI students she’s trying to help, it’s all to help make people’s lives easier in P.E.I.

“My boss thinks because we are both Chinese in P.E.I., it’s very hard for Chinese students to set up business or collect money because of the language and culture issue. We don’t know local people (so) it’s very hard for Chinese students to raise money. So, my boss asked me to organize this activity.’’

They’ve signed up 18 different businesses, many of them run by Chinese immigrants. They’re also hoping the larger community jumps in to help Chinese students we well.

Jessica Wang, a UPEI student, said the language issue makes it difficult for her to raise money. She is grateful for the support.

“I don’t know how to connect (with business),’’ Wang said. “The Chinese (business community) wants to make a contribution . . . we want to build bridges between companies and immigrants.’’

Companies that take part purchase $20 tickets. They’ve managed to raise about $1,000 so far. Peng said they didn’t have a goal when they set out so, suffice to say, they’ve exceeded it.

Peng said when she first moved Canada, language and culture was a barrier for her.

“It feels good to get help from society and friends. Now I have the ability to help those students. I think our culture has become stronger (in P.E.I.) and we now have ability to help others. We want to make people’s lives easier.’’
