SUMMERSIDE - A Summerside businessman is looking to open a new taxi service in Summerside.

Tim Reeves, owner of Lucky’s Car Cleaning, has also worked as a part-time cabbie for a number of years. He sees a need for more cabs on Summerside roads and he’s hoping to help fill that need.

“I think it would be a good business to open, and I enjoy (the work) too,” said Reeves.

He is in the midst of applying to the City of Summerside for a taxi cab stand license. The issue came up at Tuesday night’s committee of council meeting and council voted to move the application along to the next full meeting on Aug. 20 for a final vote.

Council had a brief discussion about the need for more taxies in Summerside and the city’s Taxi bylaw in general.

Coun. Tyler DesRoches asked if there was anything in the bylaw that restricted the number of taxi licences Summerside can have.

Bob Ashley, the city’s chief administrative officer, replied that there is nothing in the bylaw that outlines any sort of cap, so long as all the proper permits are held.

Summeride currently has two licensed taxi stands. There are several in the Charlottetown area.

Reeves hopes to get his final approvals from council later this month and then have the service up and running by fall.

He has dubbed the service Lucky’s taxi, to share branding with his car cleaning business. The two enterprises will also share a building at 662 Water Street East.

He plans, over time, to employ about 20 people in a mixture of part-time and full-time drivers and other positions.

It’s an exciting time, said Reeves, and he’s looking forward to hitting the road running.
