A prominent P.E.I. businessman has been named to the board of directors for the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA).

Peter MacDonald was named to the executive committee in the position of secretary-treasurer at CADA’s annual members’ meeting in Halifax recently.

MacDonald will become second vice-chairman and first vice-chairman before taking over the reigns of the national organization as chairman in October 2018.

MacDonald has served as a CADA board member twice, through his role as president of the P.E.I. Automobile Dealers Association (PEIADA) from 1995-97 and 2010-12.

This is the first time in CADA’s 73-year history that a P.E.I. automobile dealer has been named to its executive.

“I am delighted to become an important contributor to this national board, taking a more active role,’’ MacDonald said in a news release. “The automobile industry is vibrant and growing, and I am excited to be a key player involved with an organization like CADA that is so revered by those directly and indirectly involved in the automobile world.’’

After a six-year career in accounting and retail management, MacDonald purchased D. Alex MacDonald Ltd., a Ford dealership, from his father in 1985, assuming the duties as accountant and general manager. He became the dealer principal in 1991. In 2006, he purchased Fair Isle Ford Ltd. and in 2011, he opened Summerside Hyundai.

MacDonald also currently serves as the co-chairman of the Ford National Roundtable, as well as being a past member of Ford dealers regional and national roundtable committees. He is also a recipient of the MacLean Magazine Dealer of Excellence Award.

MacDonald’s previous roles include serving as president of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce, division chairman of the United Way, director of the Summerside Curling Club and the Charlottetown Curling Club, director, secretary-treasurer and auditor of the P.E.I. Curling Association and division chairman of numerous national and provincial curling championships.

MacDonald is also currently president and co-owner of the Charlottetown Islanders’ Quebec Major Junior Hockey League franchise and P.E.I. chairman of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council.

He currently resides in Charlottetown with his wife Karen.
