Chef Craig Doucette of Mavors Restaurant has been crowned the 2017 Great Island Grilled Cheese champion.
The Association of Chefs and Cooks presented the Great Island Grilled Cheese Challenge at Sobeys Extra in Stratford recently as a way to showcase the local talent in P.E.I.
“Every year, chefs from across the Island compete to create the best tasting, cheesiest sandwich,’’ said Irwin MacKinnon of the P.E.I. Chefs and Cooks Association.
It’s the second year in a row Mavors has won the award.
Celebrating six years in action, the challenge encourages chefs to get as creative as they can using 100 per cent Canadian cheese. Thr event brought more than 15 chefs together, as well as cheese producers.
Doucette walked away with a $2,000 cash prize.
Chef Diem Bui and chef Tyra Russel of Papa Joe’s took home second place and $500. Third place and people’s choice went to chef Jane Crawford of Hopyard with a $250 prize for each.
The grilled cheese challenge is part of the Fall Flavours Festival.
