ALBANY - Atlantic Beef Products in Albany, P.E.I. is throwing some extra cash at producers who provide a higher quality product.

On Aug. 6, ABP began implementing a two-cent-per-pound rail premium for all cattle that are grade AAA or higher and weigh a minimum of 750 pounds (hot dressed rail weight) from Verified Beef Production Plus ( VBP+) registered producers in Atlantic Canada.

“… We are going to financially recognize all beef producers in Atlantic Canada that have a valid Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) status in the industry,” said ABP president Russ Mallard.

“We are a strong supporter of (VBP+) and their vision of sustainability and on farm safety.”

VBP+ is a Canadawide program that enables registered beef cattle producers to prove to consumers and retailers that they adhere to the highest standards for food safety, animal care and environmental stewardship

The new premium is over and above all other grade and brand program premiums currently being paid by ABP for P.E.I. Certified Beef and Blue Dot Reserve brands.
