SUMMERSIDE- The proponents of a 64-unit apartment complex under construction in the city’s west end say their property will fill a need in the market.

Namely, hassle-free living for people entering retirement age who don’t want to tie up a great deal of their personal wealth.

The new building is designed for tenants nearing retirement age and provides amenities like large common rooms, underground heated parking, a movie theatre, lounge and fitness studio.

It is also based on a rent system, rather than condominiums. The developers said that distinction will set them apart from some of the other developments built in the city’s downtown in recent years, which are mostly condos.

Doug MacLean, a Summerside native, former NHL coach and Sportsnet broadcaster, is a shareholder in the Alleira Living property.

Company CEO Marc Gallant said MacLean’s support is a big reason as to why they decided to break ground in Summerside.

“Doug is always actively looking to enhance his hometown of Summerside and is very proud of his roots,” said Gallant.

“With our respective experience and the increasing demand for new active-aging communities, we felt that the time was ripe to develop Alleira Living’s Independent Living community in Summerside.”

The company itself has one other similar property, which was recently built in Fredericton, N.B.
