Features expanded health services, more retail, longer hours

CORNWALL - It took a few years but the Town of Cornwall has finally cut the ribbon on its new medical centre.

It's been in the works for years, talked about by provincial MLAs and three town mayors but it finally came together this year.

Murphy's Pharmacies has operated a pharmacy and medical centre in Cornwall for the past 12 years and began construction on a new pharmacy and medical centre in the spring in response to increased demand from area residents. People were looking for expanded health services, greater retail selection and extended hours.

The new building was finished in late November and is now open.

"Our mandate is to build healthier communities and it is our hope that this health-care offering will attract more residents, more retailers and more professional and government services to the community,'' said Ryan Murphy, chief operating officer with Murphy's Pharmacies.

"The community has shown us outstanding support over the past 12 years and we are very pleased to bring the health care services and retail experience they have been asking for.''

The facility includes space for physicians, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists and a pharmacy with expanded health services, extended hours and a much larger selection of products.

Pharmacy services include medication reviews, flu shots and other vaccination services, home delivery, certified foot care provided by nurses, diabetes consultations, medication packaging, customized medication, prescribing for minor ailments, quit smoking consultations, pain management consultations, ideal protein weight loss program and hormone health consultations.

There is also a Canada Post parcel pickup depot.

Janet Connolly of Stanhope told The Guardian she's thrilled to see Murphy's open the new location in Cornwall. Although she doesn't live in Cornwall, she has two sons and daughter-in-laws who do, but she's a regular at the Parkdale location.

"Love it. Prompt, professional, knowledgeable care,'' Connolly said. "If you begin a new medication they even call to see how you are.''

Mayor Minerva McCourt, who told The Guardian earlier this year that it "would be a dream'' to have a new facility built, was on hand to cut the ribbon, along with pharmacy manager Rebecca Dunn and store manager Glen McQuaid.

The site is located between Sam's Restaurant and the Esso on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The project was actually announced a few years ago but was put on hold until this year as Murphy's evaluated the impact that various regulatory and scope of practice changes would have on the pharmacy profession.
